Question:
http://www.worldwideboxoffice.com/
I've just had a quick look and found it supprising how much Titanic has taken compared to all the others.
And thats about it!
I thought that lotr would have done better than harry potter. :oh-hum:
Double post.
I had no idea that Titanic was so far ahead of the rest!

I think if your a kid you would be more interested in Harry Potter the LOTR. LOTR isn't really a kids movie and it would mostly be parents who dragged their kids to see it with them. How it got a PG rating is still a mystery to me.
I don't think anything will ever surpass Titanic now.
It was a strange film where even old people who hadn't been to a Cinema for 20 years went and watched it, and many people watched it multiple times.
The first time I saw it was on Sky movies, and it was decidedly average really.

Same here - couldn't bring myself to pay to watch it. DiCaprio really annoys me though so that was also a factor
Allowing for inflation, though, is Star Wars still the most successful? It would definately go to no. 2, not sure it it would be above Titanic.
Did they count the re-release of Star Wars SE as part of the earnings?

Actually Gone with the Wind is the most sucessful if you ajust the box office. Star Wars is #2 and titanic is actually in the top 5.

Actually LOTR: FOTR did do better than potter. Not at the box office, but come now 75-100 million between them is very good considering potter is more accessible. Once films are labeled "classics" they often draw less audience than the ones labeled "crap" or "okay". LOTR would have passed potter worldwide if it hadnt been New Line releasing it in Japan too late. By which time of course the critics had their say months earlier and said the film was one of the best ever, which makes people think its going to be horrendously complicated (remember The Usual Suspects?)...
In complete earning this is how the two fare:
Cinematic Box Office (worldwide):
#1 Harry Potter: $960m
#2 Lord of the Rings: $860m
DVD/VHS Rental & Purchase (worldwide):
#1 Lord of the Rings: $740m
#2 Harry Potter: $520m
Merchandise (worldwide):
#1 Lord of the Rings: $1.2bn
#2 Harry Potter: $900m
Other Profits (worldwide):
#1 Lord of the Rings: $300m
#2 Harry Potter: $180m
Totals:
#1 Lord of the Rings: $3.1bn (as of sept 2002)
#2 Harry Potter: $2.5bn (as of aug 2002)
Not bad really as each film only cost around $100m and had a marketing budget of around the same on a worldwide scale. Each film wound up profiting over 2 billion dollars each.
Well, worldwide for Titanic, 1.8 billion, domestic, 600 million, so twice that, 1.2 overseas, but if you take just domestic US, and adjust for price inflation, Titanic is actually surpassed by 5 movies that came a dozen or more years ago.
This is the correct all time box office gross chart:

Away from the big screen that was always going to be true. I expected to hate it and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Not worthy of it's greatest takings ever status but I'd have said it was slightly above average, even if I could never watch it again.
Do all those totals apply only to box office receipts or is money earned from merchandise, video rental, DVD and video sales included?
Nothing is going to topple Titanic. Not for a long time.
However I do find it a shame that the All Time Top Ten will now be populated with Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings movies.
nothing wrong with having the LOTR films in the all time top 10.:)
