Question:
Buy yourself a few Snapper Protector cases from *********. They are simply plastic containers, a little bigger than a snapper case, designed for storing individual snappers so that they keep nice for longer. However, I've found that cardboard DVD cases (such as the case for Almost Famous: Untitled R1, or E.T. 2-disc R1) that lack an outer slipcase also fit quite snugly inside, making an elegant and practical solution to the problem of how to store them.
Just thought I'd share this. Simply go to *********.com and do a search for Protector Case. You can't look at the info (it's just a clear plastic case), but you can add them directly to your cart from the search results page. They are £1.00 each.
i too recommend these, have also used it to house my Bootleg.. wish they were just a tinsy bit bigger for ones like Se7en and Magnolia :oh-hum:
but still invaluable purchases to help avoid dog-earing and scuffing to your valuable titles.. also makes them look more important!!
So will these fit cardboard foldout cases such as the R1 Starship Troopers 2-disc SE?

I thought it was just the R1 that had the cardboard slipcase Robo (could be wrong tho  )...
If the case is the same size as a standard snapper, then it will more than likely fit. Therefore Fight Club (R1/R2), Seven (R1), Moulin Rouge (R1) etc. won't fit, but Almost Famous: Untitled (R1), Starship Troopers SE (R1) and the new E.T. 2-disc set (R1) should do. From that list I've only tried Almost Famous, so simply use the size of that release as a guide.
Or just you could just "aquire" one from the shelf of your local branch of HMV. ;)

Off-topic I know: how come you (& tj_director) don't have R2 'Almost famous: Untitled' instead of R1?
DTS on BOTH versions of the film PLUS all the same extras!
(I was wary about the 'Stairway...' deleted scene not working due to PAL speed-up but they've mastered it from NTSC so it's fine...)
:smokin:
Three reasons:
1) I like to hear the entire movie at the correct speed
2) The R1 comes with an exclusive Stillwater CD
3) The packaging on the R1 is far nicer (bar the missing slipcase, of course)
To be honest, while I like DTS, I'm just not as crazy about it as some people. Unless the master used for the DTS track is slightly different from that used for the DD track (as is the case with some movies, i.e. Jaws R1), the only difference should be in the bitrate (and most of the time DTS is only around 750kbps, with DD being around 450kbps). Even then, the differences can sound miniscule even on the most expensive setup. DTS is more of a marketing tool than anything. Sure, if it's included, it'd be my track of choice due to the higher bitrate, but a well-done DD track can sound equally nice.

1) Do/did you refuse to watch movies on TV & video then?
2) The CD's rubbish (they're a PRETEND band fer cryin'-out-loud!)
3) The packaging is cardboard (what's this got to do with the film anyway?)
The DTS sound on the longer cut is superior to the 5.1 & the picture quality is better (EASILY noticeable during the credits, even on a 32" widescreen)...
If you loved the film, you'd get the R2 - as it is you're obviously making excuses for having a 'nice-looking item' on your shelf...
You're obviously a 'collector' as opposed to a cineaste! ;)

My point is this: it's all about the FILM...
Anyone choosing a particular issue based on it's packaging loves DVD (the medium) more than the content, obviously...
I bought the R1 based on the fact that, at the time, it WAS NOT going to get a R2 release in the same fomat. Then it emerged as a superior issue (surprise, surprise) in R2 so I (reluctantly, as always!) upgraded...
If you (or ANYONE else) says "I've spent my money, I'm not buying the same title again" (for WHATEVER REASON), fair enough, at least that's HONEST...
To say "DTS is more of a marketing tool than anything" & "the packaging on the R1 is far nicer" is making EXCUSES to justify keeping an inferior product...
OK? I wasn't looking for a fight or 'flaming' you for the sake of it - if my tone appears a little harsh it's because I feel passionately about the subject (this is what debate IS, after all)...
I LOVE film - do you?
Peace.
:smokin:
Anyway ladies, put your handbag's away, we're talkin' bout slipcases here. Ordered 5 for myself - gotta be worth a look for £5.
Cheers for the idea SithLordSi :)
So that we can put this debate to rest and get back on topic:

Then it emerged as a superior issue (surprise, surprise) in R2 so I (reluctantly, as always!) upgraded...
Not necessarily so. I do love the medium, but only because it's such an excellent way of presenting the content. Film was my first love, not DVD. I'm pretty sure that's true of 99% of people on these forums. Besides, I didn't choose the R1 based solely on packaging. In actual fact, there was no consideration made, because at the time of purchase it was the only version available. I just chose not to upgrade because I would take a correctly pitched soundtrack over extra resolution and DTS any day of the week. The fact that I preferred the gate-fold cover with the CD had far less to do with it, to be honest.
If you (or ANYONE else) says "I've spent my money, I'm not buying the same title again" (for WHATEVER REASON), fair enough, at least that's HONEST...To say "DTS is more of a marketing tool than anything" & "the packaging on the R1 is far nicer" is making EXCUSES to justify keeping an inferior product...
Please try to remember that it is only your opinion that the R2 is superior. I prefer the R1. My opinion on DTS was formed long before I bought this product, and as a result the inclusion of a DTS track on the R2 was not enough to warrant a re-purchase. I've already explained that the packaging was a smaller consideration. If I was a fan of PAL, and gave a toss about DTS, then I wouldn't have had any problem with the R2 case. But that's all hypothetical, as I generally prefer NTSC. Let's just leave it at that, shall we?
OK? I wasn't looking for a fight or 'flaming' you for the sake of it - if my tone appears a little harsh it's because I feel passionately about the subject (this is what debate IS, after all)...

How about favouring video & audio quality over packaging & 'collectability'?
So you NEVER watch a film on TV/Video & NEVER buy PAL DVDs?
Of course not, right?
:smokin:
Just so you know, Troll, my collection is skewed heavily in favour of NTSC material. I own 21 PAL DVDs (the majority UK R2, but with a couple of foreign R2 and R4 releases thrown in) compared to 53 NTSC ones (mostly R1/R0, with a couple of R3). Most of my PAL DVDs are versions that are either exclusive to R2/R4, or are without any argument the best version (i.e. Hong Kong Legends releases). As I've said, this is because I generally prefer NTSC transfers.

Yes, I do like to hear (and indeed see) the movie at its original speed. However - and as I'm sure you must know - some titles simply aren't available in any decent form in the NTSC market.
Example 1: Audition. I have the anamorphic PAL German R2, which boasts a transfer leaps and bounds ahead of all other versions, to the point where the colour palette is entirely different in most scenes. In this case, the semi-serious issues with the (non-anamorphic) R1 transfer stopped me buying it.
Example 2: La Haine. I have the anamorphic PAL French R2. I am not aware that it even exists in the R1 market.
Example 3: Any HKL title. Fist of Fury. Way of the Dragon. Iron Monkey etc. The restoration on these titles is incredible, and no other version in the world currently comes close.
Example 4: Back To The Future. I have the R4, simply because I wanted to watch the movies with my friends during the summer. I will replace it when the R1 is released.
So I guess you could say that, while I value NTSC transfers higher than PAL transfers, I will occasionally make an exception for titles where other factors strike me as more important. Suffice to say, DTS tracks, plastic cases etc. are not examples of these factors!
Now, enough of this particular debate! If it carries on, it should at least have its own thread so that others know where its at and can join in if they wish.

I have to say that most of my purchases are Region 1s due to the superior packaging and artwork on the majority of releases. Also the extras are better for most releases (not that I watch them anyway:D ). However, I have to say that when I compare some of my region 4s (same picture quality as R2 due to PAL) with the region 1s in terms of picture quality, the region 4s seem to show more clarity and sharpness on my Sony KV28 FX 60 WEGA widescreen:D .
This was particularly evident when I compared my R4 version of Blade with the R1 New Line Platuinum release. I could see the improved picture qaulity of the R4 straight away as the R1 seemed to have a very soft picture. This is not the case with all of them though, as I find that with the more big budget releases such as Star Wars, LOTR, X-Men, Panic Room, the picture difference between the region 1 and 2/4 is hardly noticable.
At the end of the day, you have to say that both Region 1s and 2s have their own merits and faults but personally I would go for region 1 without any hesitation due to earlier release dates, better packaging, and better extras at the expense of a slight picture quality loss (which is questionable).:)
