Question:
I recently discovered the joys of Akira, but one thing is puzzling me. The Internet Movie Database makes reference to two prints: a 35mm one at 1.85:1, and a 70mm one at 2.20:1. All the DVD editions seem to be 1.78:1 -- near enough to the 35mm aspect ratio. The thing is, which ratio was it originally composed for? The storyboard frames shown in the Production Report on disc 2 look suspiciously like 2.20:1 frames. So, was the 2.20 print simply matted from 1.85, or was the 1.85 print in fact cropped down from 2.20?
Any ideas?
I've only seent he 1.85 print on TV/Video/DVD not heard anything about a different aspect ratio....
Would be interesting to know if there is a wider aspect version floating around....
With animation, drawing what will not usually be seen generally doesn't get done. Hence, I belive that the OAR is 1.85/1.77. The 2.2 70mm version is almost certainly a crop from the 1.85.
