Question:
OK completely different genres but released so close to each other i thought i'd draw a comparison.
In many ways 'Big Trouble' was kind of a sequel to Get Shorty, stylistically i mean. It has that same edge all that was missing was Chili Palmer.
'MIBII' was by the books money making and i can see why it was panned by critics, yet 'Big Trouble' wasn't exactly panned yet failed to set any box offices alight despite a killer cast.
If you were put off by Sonnenfeld's 'MIBII' don't let that stop you checking out 'Big Trouble', it's quite a dark comedy with fantastic ensemble cast. Every 10 minutes you're like, "hey it's him... or her" :D
I won't list any, other than Johnny Knoxville who i had no idea was in it and had one of the best lines I think i can hear one of them silent alarms
Tis a fun movie, a little silly in places but far superior to 'MIBII' it's made me want to get 'Get Shorty' even more now. That film needs a decent DVD release.
What did you think of it?, better than 'MIBII'?
I havent seen it, but i agree it is better... MAinly cos i think MIIB was possibly the worst film i have ever seen at the cinema
Big Trouble is a horrible film. And I hear MIB II is plain bad too.
Poor Barry Sonnenfeld.
I loved Big Trouble, never has a comedy been so funny and got so many laughs from me and the audience I was with. Usually action or horror movies get more laughs than comedies because they're simply stupid, this one, however, is sharp and full of wit, if you like Get Shorty then Big Trouble is surely in the same vein.
"Okay, we gotta pick a road. Arrivals or departures? We're arriving, but... then we're departing. Which one, Snake?"

"Are you guys for real?"
"Please don't make fun of us..." :(
firstly i was probably one of the only people who thought MIB2 was alright, and not as bad as many made out, especially on a second viewing.. but i definately agree that more people should have seen 'Big Trouble' before deciding Sonnenfeld was some sort of one hit wonder. After i watched it i immediately put it into my collection, it was just complete entertainment through and through and had one hell of an ensemble cast... :D
It is very similar in style to Get Shorty, it may not have the coolness of Shorty or the overall class and satirical value yadda, yadda etc.. and in a way i could see why Big Trouble didn't set alight with audiences like Get Shorty, mainly because there are no real A-List stars, and there isn't a real hook that could grab people, in fact it's hard to describe the plot without taking away the fun of the whole movie.. i watched it knowing nothing expect the talent involved, and as a result i had a great time, not one minute felt wasted, it's just a good fun movie directed with great aplomb.. i had a smile the whole time, and laughed a lot.. it's one of those movies i reckon any normal viewer couldn't help but to enjoy at least a little.
I could watch this film again easily, the perfomances are top notch, you catch something new each time.. anyone who likes the style of Sonnenfeld and isn't a prude will love this movie.. and i agree it's a real shame it didn't get the attention it deserved, and while i'm not a MIB2 hater, i think if everyone who saw that movie saw Big Trouble instead, then much more of them would have left theatres happy!!
I read Dave Barry's Book "Big Trouble" and was hooked. Got the movie on RC1 since they delayed the cinema opening due to Sept. 11.
Really liked the movie. It's quite faithful to the book, has a very fitting ensemble cast, does remind of "Get Shorty" in style (well, we can always hope for Barry S. to snag film rights to "Be Cool"). Not bad at all.
If a comparison to MIB2 is to be made: I like Barry Sonnenfeld for Shorty/Trouble and definitely not for MIB I+II (while the first was quite entertaining, I have to agree, the second was pure moneymaking trash)

I've read that MGM, short on hits at the moment, have a sequel to "Get Shorty" in the works for next year. Don't know who's involved at this stage.
So maybe they'll give "Get Shorty" the special edition treatment it deserves!
Big Trouble was hilarious, really really cool stuff... Some of the dialogue was simply superb (the 2 FBI's especially, even if it is very influenced by pulp ficttion) and the acting etc, sets, just the oriiginal ideas etc, ust full of them - great stuff.. Hardly a classic but one you could enoy time and time again... really wana get the dvd of this! :)
Way better than MIIB, this should have got the huge release instead... Up there with Get Shorty, so why make stuff like MIIB aswell?! :(
