Flash Gordon (Buster Crabbe) R1 releases - help!
Question:

There are now SO many different R1 editions of, say, Flash Gordon Conquers The Universe, that I'm completely lost, and Amazon's listings are a little vague and ambiguous.
Which is the R1 version of choice, with the complete uncut episodes, and the interview/TV ads/Olympics extras? Is it the VCI release from 2000? Are the Image releases of the three key serials edited? What about the recent 2002 issues from various companies such as Gotham and others?
Please help. I had R1 recommended to me over R2 for restoration and extras, but it's getting hard to tell what's what...

Oh come on! Not so long ago this place was overflowing with experts on this topic, I seem to remember, but now the available choices have grown. I'm sorry if I'm going over too much old ground for some, but someone MUST have a recommendation...?

Basically go for the Image ones. They have the better transfers.
Unfortunately the VCI ones have the extras - so it's whatever is more important to you.
Couldn't comment on the R2 versions, but check out The Digital Bits for R1 - they have good comparisons in their review section.

THANK YOU, dunkrag!! :) :)
The reviews at Digital Bits and the information on Image's site are exactly what I needed.

So it would seem from the DB reviews. They also appear to be the only uncut ones, judging by the times on Image's site for those and other versions. Pity that the VCI and Ventura editions have much nicer covers...
:dork:
Pity about those extras too; if Image had nabbed them there would be no contest at all!
DB make no mention of the R2s but I have heard elsewhere that they are "godawful".

i have the image discs, and was pleased with them at the time i obtained them. who needs extras anyway? :D

Yes I also recommend the Image disks (I think they now offer this as a 3 disk boxset whereas I had to buy them singly).
With the Image disks Parts 1 (Space Soldiers) and 3 (Conquers the Universe) are dual layer DVD9s Part 2 (Trip to Mars) is a double side DVD18 as its longer
As others say the VCI has extras but I read its like their Buck Rogers (which I do have) and has very long rubbish forced intros. Also they only use single layer DVD5s so Buck Rogers is double sided DVD10 and Flash Gordon is also a DV10 or possibly DVD10 + DVD5 (2 disks)

According to the DVD box office site the Image discs are the feature length edited versions. Can anyone confirm this as i would prefer to get the episodic versions if possible.

The 3 Image disks are split by episode, so you have the scrolling text recap with the previous episode cliffhanger and how they get out of it at the start of each episode. I have them and this is also confirmed by Amazon uncut and split into original episodes.
BTW they did come in snappers

Thanks Malcy. I feel a purchase coming up.

Flash Gordon Conquers The Universe (P & S) 1 $ 43.98 CAD
Flash Gordon: Space Soldiers (P & S) 1 $ 43.98 CAD
Flash Gordon's Trip To Mars (P & S) 1 $ 57.98 CAD
Flash Gordon: The Deadly Ray From Mars (P & S) 1 $ 30.98 CAD
Flash Gordon: The Peril From Planet Mongo (P & S) 1 $ 30.98 CAD
Flash Gordon: The Purple Death From Outer Space (P & S) 1 $ 30.98 CAD
Flash Gordon: Spaceship To The Unknown (P & S) 1 $ 30.98 CAD
These are the Image versions from DVDSoon, so around £100-130 for the lot.
Just to make sure, do these have the separate episodes with recap?
Is there an option to play episodes one after another (if in episode form) or is it return to menu, select next one?

doesnt that list above include the same titles more than once? to the best of my knowledge, there were only actually 3 seperate serials....

Don't know....there's also the 3 pack that's mentioned, but before I rush out and buy anything, I would like to know either way.

I thought there were only three Buster Crabbe serials as well. Although there were later series of Flash Gordon with a different actor (50's or 60's) as they were on one of the satellite channels earlier this year.

The three titles found in the Image boxset, "...Conquers The Universe", "...Trip To Mars" and "...Space Soldiers", are the complete episodic serials. The other titles listed above are edited portions of these. So if you get the box (or those same three discs separately which currently seems easier, but not cheaper) you will have the lot, in episode form, with no nasty compilation-edits.

I ordered the box set 2 months ago from DVD import but it still hasn't shipped. Still patience is supposed to be a virtue.
