Mr Deeds - well worth a look
Question:

Recent Adam Sandler efforts have not been that good, but this puts him right back on track. His third best film (after Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Sandler.) It is a typical Sandler film, but there are lot of laugh-out-loud moments which there have not been from his films in a few years. I was almost in tears at some scenes. The last third is pretty free of laughs, but they have to fit in a storyline somewhere. Well worth seeing!

Answers:

i also really enjoyed this when i saw it in the US
especially the bit where hes making the butler poke his frost bitten foot, i almost fell off my seat

I saw that in the trailer and all in all the film looked pretty good based on the trailer.
I'll probably get around to watching it soon.

Yep that was in the trailer as well.
Hang on - how many funny bits are there that weren't in the trailer?

the bit where the TV program edited it so it looked like he was throwing the cats on the pavement, especially the *splat* noises

That's good to see. I was getting worried that it was one of those films where all the best bits are in the trailer, and the film is a letdown.

I just watched this and have to say I'm a little bit disappointed...
Although it does have its fair share of funny moments (like the ones mentioned in spoilers earlier), it's just too contrived and syrupy to be that entertaining IMO. I'm a big fan of Sandler aswell and I rate Happy Gilmore as one of the most purely enjoyable films in existence, but Mr Deeds just doesn't 'feel' right to me. I think the fact that Robert Simonds doesn't produce this one renders the 'Happy Madison' tag obsolete really (and a lie!). Simonds influence was definitely missed on this movie and when you consider that Dirty Work (a much lower-budget flick which he did produce) is more effective, it's even more telling...
I thought the timing was off, the acting was sub-par (Ryder didn't engage me at all) and the directing was rather questionable. The nearest comparison to another Sandler flick would be Little Nicky actually, as that had similar problems with tone and pacing. I don't like it when I have to frown every 10 minutes due to some sort of genre-inconsistency (It goes from all-out spoof, to all-out sincerity much too easily). It felt like Happy-Madison-by-numbers to me, so the syrupy bits were a yawn rather than the joy they normally are...
It's worth a look (well, a rent maybe) simply because there are a couple of scenes that work really well, but I thought it was extremely hit-and-miss overall.

but defo the butler was the best character :)

i'm a big Sandler fan, have loved all his movies, even Little Nicky grew on me after the 3rd viewing... but when i saw the trailer for Mr.Deeds, i was slightly apprehensive, thinking it may be Sandler on the decline... but i was WRONG!
before sticking the DVD in, (well upside down at first... too many brewskies!) i thought this may be a poor film, but so long as the usual mates of Sandler are in, i really wouldn't care if it didn't make me laugh... but fortunately they were in and very nicely too, and Turturro is bound to become another 'sneaky' Sandler fixture. Plus it made me laugh.. quite a lot, and it seems the trailer may have put some of the funny bits in, of which i didn't laugh at in the actual trailer.. but in the film, i laughed my ass off!
It's Sandler being Sandler, the nice guy who will Kick ass when need be, and that's my favourite aspect of every Sandler film.. yeah the laughs aren't as strong in the final third, but that's the same for all other Sandler films and comedies in general.. (except in my mind Big Daddy, which has an excellent 3rd act!)... but who cares, it's fun throughout, and a definaite keeper for me, looking forward to watching again, as all these types of movies get better on repeated viewings!!
BTW - as for being a remake, i've not seen the original, but i would recommend people don't go in trying to do a comparison, the film i imagine is COMPLETELY different in style etc.. they've just taken the basic plot, and done their own stuff with it. Just look at it as another dumb carefree comedy
PS: always a good sign when more than half the film's soundtrack is already in your CD collection!!! :rocker:

Sorry but I thought this film was bloody awful :( Ten minutes into the movie, I just knew it was rank - I couldn't give a monkeys about any of the characters, and felt that the 'small-town' characters were just terrible - especially Deeds' 'best friend' in the village.
There was only one or two parts I actually laughed at - both of which you see in the trailer - apart from that, a total let down for me. No real story, charcaters I didn't care about and for a comedy, it just wasn't funny - IMHO the funniest sections are in the trailer.
Having watched the trailer on a DVD, I thought it would be brilliant. Wish I hadn't bothered now :(
You guys enjoyed it though, so fair play to you, and each to their own :)

Can anyone tell me why the Butler thinks he's worth $40 billion when Deeds has already sold the shares and spent the cash?
Actually, the foot thing was even funnier if you'd seen the trailer, as it doesn't unfold the way you think you've already seen it doing. But the laughs were far from non stop!

I saw this on a plane, so it may not have been the full version, but it was distinctly average at best. It past the time on a plane but were I not "tied down" I'd have got up and done something else.

Good point!
I can't remember him spending the cash though  Saying that, I may well have fell asleep at this point.
The more I think about it, the more I really didn't take to this film at all - I'd put in on a par with 'Down to Earth' in terms of a film that fails to deliver in every department.

the foot scene is pretty much the funniest scene in the film, overall its worth a watch but not the best sandler film ive watched.

Answers:

the point is that the shares weren't his to sell, so the bad guy doesn't have the controlling vote.
admittedly, the 40 billion did go to the charity, which i can't explain

Anyone seen the original? You can't buy it on VHS or DVD in the UK :(

I've seen both the Sandler and Frank Capra versions. I'm a massive fan of Frank Capra's movies and was wondering if this remake would be any good. It wasn't great but was certainly enjoyable. Well worth a look. If you can find the original version though, snap it up the second you see it! :)

I can explain this one...
...the person who received the $40 billion chq. fell over at the shock of such a huge chq., cracked his head on the floor and died a horrible death, so the chq. was never cashed
Simple really.

Top film and finally Sandler has lost the annoying voices he has used in every film in the past. Anybody know what his next release will be?

Answers:

towerof power,
Sandlers new films are 8 Crazy Nights an animated movie about Chanukah (sp?) and Punch Drunk Love, a romantic arty type film.
Both are okay, but neither are outstanding. I am a big Sandler fan and have all his earlier stuff on DVD ie Bulletproof, Happy Gilmore, Wedding Singer, Billy Madison etc.. but tbh I am finding his newer stuff increasingly more dull.
Tis a shame, but I would still look forward to a sequel of Happy Gilmore or Wedding Singer if they were to ever happen.

Thanks I was hoping for the R2 version. I'd rather rent it from in-movies than buy it
