Question:
Hi all,
I was having a conversation with some mates about movies in the pub, usually it gets rather boring as we agree alot :).
However today we started talking about the most expensive/rare DVD's out there. At first I thought as they are mass produced none of them are worth much (over thier inital cost) or are entirely rare. I know that many films are made Ltd Edt (ie AoD) and that some Criterions (ie 400 Blows, Salo) are worth a bit.
But my questions to you are these...
1. Which DVD would you think has the highest market value presently? Both second hand and new releases. (not including the fake Neighbiurs Boxset :) )
2. Which DVD would you consider to be the rarest? (may well be the most expensive too)
3. Which DVD will be worth the most in the future? (no set time, just your thoughts. Like Star Wars original VHS go for a packet etc)
Any other thoughts on on this matter really :)
Thanks
Saviola
ps I tried a search but im lazy so may have missed it :norty:
A few months ago I'd have said it was the out of Print R1 'They live' and the Criterion version of Hard Boiled seemed to go for high prices on ebay.
Of course they live is now out on R2
salo is the most expensive movie i've seen sell, though i have seen some thx trailer dvds goes for really stupid amounts.
as for rare, maybe salo, maybe R1 ed wood, or the R1 beavis and butthead. no real numbers are known as they were withdrawn and only a few snuck out.
I have the entire Criterion oop collection on DVD which hopefully one day might fetch a few bucks. But who knows.
The thing to bare in mind is that in 20 years DVD will be as hip as laserdisc is today (as in not very).
Having said that though I bought some some rare laserdiscs today
Criterion Naked (Mike Leigh)
The Rapture (Michael Tolkin)
Damage (Lois Malle)
£30
All of which contain commentary tracks that are deemed to be lost forever.
So they didnt cost much, but there value to me is quite high.

I would probably say Salo Criterion from looking around, pretty much it seems to be OOP Criterions and Anchor Bay Tins which fetch the most (and there is no reason why they shouldn't do for a while)
Yeah the same sort of titles are being mentioned..
Never really thought about prints being sent out and returned ie Alan Partridge, B&B..
I also feel that that because DVD's are easier to keep in good condition they will not be the antiques (so's to speak) of the future as there will more than likely be many of them around.
But as ColinD states some DVD/LD/VHS can be worth a mint to the right person.

the original THX Sampler is very rare and very expensive,i think very few were made - i'm sure one of the older hands can make the definitive statement here!
