Hmmm, I 'm seriously considering disposing of my HK Boxset and buying all these releases.
Are there any reviews of the R2 version floating around - I can't seem to find any. I'd really like to wait for the R2/UKR2 for the apparently excellent English Dub/extras, but I might get the R3 to pass the innevitable wait to the Western release.

After loving Totoro and Kiki, I'm sure I won't be dissapointed. Seems a lot of people have Laputa as their favourite Miyazaki film, so I'm hoping it's something special.:)

I've only watched my R2 once myself, but I would put it up there with Totoro and Sen to Chihiro....
The English dub on the Japanese Disc was actually pretty good. Not as literal as the original script but it leaves the Porco Rosso dub miles behind. Pazu is voiced by a female and Sheeta's voice is a little too high. Other then that i was quite impressed by the result. I asume that this was the dub available when Laputa was shown on British TV? The new Disney dub, is this the only other one besides the Japanese release dub?

Disney redubbed and renamed the film (its just 'Castle in the Sky' now, something to do with 'Laputa' being a naughty spanish word) for a planned Theatrical release, oh, I don't know when. It probably won't surprise you they buried it!
The new dub stars James Vanderbeek (not sure if i spelt that right) but the reason I would assume most fans are interested is because they brought Joe Hisaishi onboard to record additional music for the new dub.

I don't think its entirely true they buried Laputa as such - the intention was really to do a video release a-la Kiki, but it was at the point that DVD purchasing was on the increase and they didn't have the DVD rights to the movie. The whole R1 Mononoke fiasco with the Japanese track shows that BV Japan are very protective about the DVD market for these movies, and aren't really going to allow the movie to be released on DVD outside Japan first. I figure Disney will release it R1 next year now that the Japanese release is out. Ditto a UK release, actually.
IIRC Joe Hisaishi didn't record -additional- music, simply re-recorded the movies soundtrack with a proper orcestra rather than the synth stuff of the original.
just had a look on Nausicaa.net and from their production diary on the new soundtrack it would appear we are both partly correct - it seems they completely redid the entire soundtrack, extended, added, changed etc.
I'm still unsure about Disney's intentions for Laputa - they've shown it theatrically but only to select audiences which to me suggests they have the required prints ready to go, but just haven't gone ahead with any serious release. I guess we'll never know for sure but on their track record it certainly wouldn't surprise me if they simply couldn't be bothered.
