Fellow Crackers,
it's also non-anamorphic.
The R2 release is anamorphic.
Winner by a mile : R2.

I'd say the winner, by more than a mile ;), is the R1 which is in the original aspect ratio and has an absolutely gorgeous, if non-anamorphic, transfer. Coupled with a DTS track not present on the R2, this one's a no-brainer IMO....

Fellow Halloweener,
Your mileage may vary...

I guess what it all comes down to is if you have a widescreen TV or not.
Those with wide screen sets will probably want to zoom in on the picture anyway, losing a little picture info on the top and bottom. People with 4/3 sets will prefer 1.66:1 non-anamorphic. I'm not to bothered about DTS and I have a WS TV so for me the choice is simple: anamorphic UK R2. Besides I got it at HMV for £9.99. making the choice even simpler.
Of course the best ting would be if the transfers where 1.66:1 anamorphic.
