Peter Bogdanovich's 'The Cat's Meow'
Question:

This is for sale on DVD at Amazon.com - did I miss something?
I didn't even know it had been properly released in American 'theatres' (maybe it never was) - I remember a rapturous review by Armond White in the NY-Press but presumed that was based on a preview screening.
It's the semi-true story of a celebrity party on William Hearst's yacht starring, among others, Eddie Izzard as Charlie Chaplin and Kirsten Dunst as the owner of Rosebud. There are some rough comparisons with 'Gosford Park' (there's also a murder at this gathering) and it's apparently Bogdanovich's directorial return to form.
Disappointingly the DVD doesn't feature a commentary - I guess he's got another 10 Welles films to blabber through before he bothers with his own stuff - but I'll certainly pick up this disc when I find some money. Anyone else interested or own it already?
Now let's be seeing releases of Daisy Miller, Paper Moon and - after an approriately respectful delay - Targets...

I've got it!
I knew we'd never get it in cinemas here in the UK!
The version I got (Lions Gate, Canadian) does indeed have a commentary by Peter Bogdanovich. Just to digress - Why has he never been signed up for animation voice over work or something? He has the nicest, most soothing voice ever! anyway...
Not actually watched the film yet but had to get it! I love "true" Hollywood tales and this cast is fabulous! Also loved every film of Bogdanovich's that I've seen so far.
I read somewhere that Paper Moon is on the way next year (that and The Last Pcture Show are my faves!)

Ah... foolish of me to trust Amazon's spec lists. Good news on the commentary though I don't care for his 'Citizen Kane' one (knowing his interview book 'This is Orson Welles' thoroughly didn't help - I could see the same old anecdotes coming from miles off) and I think that ending his career on voice-over work would be taking his Welles adoration a little too far..!
'Mask' is the only Bogdanovich film I didn't like much. 'The Last Picture Show' is by a long way my favourite but his first 4 films are all splendid.
I see 'Texasville' is also available on disc, as is a standalone documentary about filming in Archer City (I think it was on the laserdisc).

Does the Canadian version have French writing all over the cover?

Answers:

nope - just the Canadian age cert on the back cover.
I think it's cause there's no French language track.

It did get a theatrical release over here in Oz - in fact, it's still playing.
