Question:
Should I opt for the R1 over the R2? I know the R2 had the frame 'cropped' to reduce the violence (as opposed to outright cutting). But does the R1 actually have scenes (presumably battle footage) that are not in the R2?
Cheers

I have the R1. It represents the original version of the film. I hadn't heard of any cropping done to the R2 version, but I do know that the scene where the English magistrate gets his throat slit was altered. In the R2, we get a side view. In the R1, we get a front-on shot and see the blood pouring out of the wound. I don't think there were any cuts other than that.

Only reframing + angle change, no actual cuts on R2 UK AFAIK.
R1 is uncropped, but it's been squeezed on to one disc and suffers a little from the compression.
R4 is 2 discs like R2, but I don't know which version they used.
R4 is cut, same as R1.
And yes, I consider it a cut. They changed the angle to avoid an 18, which counts as censorship in my book.
bbc1 showed the R1 version of the filma while back.
Channel 5, however, always show the R2 version.
