Widescreen, DTS 6.1 Japanese soundtrack (5.1 EX too), Audio Commentary and some trailers for the series, Death & Rebirth, etc
Oh and as I pre ordered it it came with a sampler Anime disc with 39 trailers and the 1st epsisode of Cowboy Bebop :)
Now I just have to wait for Sc-Fi to finsish showing the series before I can actually watch it!

Now I just have to wait for Sc-Fi to finsish showing the series before I can actually watch it! You should already have the Eva series boxset you philistine, if only for the Japanease language track;). My R4 Copy of EoE arrived today as well. I did have the R1 but it was one of the dodgy pressings. Fortunatly A&B gave a RMA for a refund no problem.
ps, you may well know this already, but I just thought I'd mention that you can watch EoE after episode 24, you don't quite have to wait for Sci-fi to finish all of it;).
It's funny, I'm so used to the English dub now that it's going to be weird watching this in it's original Japanese language!
& to be fair, I didn't know anything about this show before I started watching it on Sci-Fi so to buy the perfect collection that's out seems a little crazy, not to mention expensive :dork:

Hey Mr Nice, could you do me a favour please sir (hope you look at this thread again!)
You said I can watch EoE after episode 24 in the series, do you have the title of that episode as Sc-Fi have the titles but I don't believe they show the episode number, thanks
Also I noticed in the perfect collection, the last 2 discs are M 15+ rather than PGs, what episode (again by title of episode) does the higher rating apply from, as I'll watch these on late night Sci-Fi rather than on Saiko Exciting where they may be edited
Thanks ever so much :)

Heh, with Evangelion even something as inocuous as episode titles isn't simple;). Episodes actually have 2 titles, since on the original Japanease title cards they had one name in Japanease and a different name(not a translation) in English;). Regardless, I don't know episode titles of by heart. According to the bbfc's website, episode 24 is "The Final Messenger".Originally posted by RichB

Disc 7&8 cover eps 21-26, episode 21 is "The Birth of Nerv." However, remember that Australian ratings don't directly correlate to English ratings, so I don't think that 7&8 getting M15's will be much of a guide as far as sci-fi cutting it goes.
Looking at the bbfc website for example, out of episodes 21-23(disc 7), all 3 eps got PGs, while 24-26(disc 8) all got 12's.
Most Eva episodes have PG in the UK, there are a few other 12 certs for before episode 21.
Thanks again for your help, very useful

Cheers Largely covered in the other Eva thread a week back.
"End of Evangelion" is effectively a replacement for episodes 25/6. Depending on your point of view, episodes 25/6 could be contained within EoE. Most people would say that seeing EoE is essential if you don't want to be really disappointed/confused with how Eva ends.
"Death & Rebirth" is basically in 2 parts, "Death" is a recap of episodes 1-24, but told in Evas own style of fractured flash back, and is character centric as opposed to linear time centric, and makes very little sense if you haven't previously seen the series, combined with "Rebirth", the first 20 minutes or so of EoE.
D&R is something of a historical curiosity, and isn't really neccessary to see. The "Death" section does contain a few new scenes, and new animation for old scenes(which you only really notice if you see the originals soon after and notice the comparitive lack of animation). The new scenes have been integrated back into the "directors cut" of eps 21-24, but these will almost certainly never see publication outside of Japan, and the Japanease DVD's of Evangelion do not contain an English subtrack.
As far as I'm aware, theres no real difference between R1/4 of the series other then that the R4 involves NTSC-PAL conversion as you might expect.
Feature wise, D&R is identical between the regions. However, before coming onto the main difference between R1/4, it is neccessary to explain one of the features, "Mokuji Interactive", which is essentially a beefed up "follow the white rabbit" feature, where you often have a choice of topics to choose an explanaition of while watching, kind of funky, but you can see it all by browsing the "Magi Archives" anyway. But, between this and the subtitle track, it exceeds the overlay limit for a title. So it became neccesary to include the film twice. In R1, this takes the form of a R10, with the main feature on one side, with all the audio tracks and the subtitles, the other side just the commentary, English 2.0 and the mokuji interactive. With the R4, both are on one side as a DVD9. This allowes the Main feature to spill over into the 2nd layer, creating a better bitrate.
With EoE, with the R1 there are faulty disks out there which lack the seperator between the 2 layers, which makes some players cannot play at all, some give up at the layer change.
Wow, thanks for the detailed response Mr Nice :notworthy
I bought the R1 box set. then bought the French R2 twin box of 'Death and Rebirth' and 'EoE'. The last 5min of EoE is simply astonishing, and leave you breathless!

My main gripe with the disc is that it's not anamorphic. At least the subtitles remain within the 16:9 frame so you can zoom on a WS TV without chopping them off. You'd think after all this time they could organize a anamorphic transfer... :|

But this reminds me of the other big "oops" of the R1 EoE: The subs are apparently a tad too low in the frame, so when zoomed on 16:9 tvs it clips the bottom line of subtitles.
r4 is corrected here.
Had no problems with my End of Eva R1
I'm not one for zooming (picture looks OK on 28 inch widescreen TV set anyway) so no worries there!
Manga really should get their act together though...
While I'm in a ranting mood - how about some decent extras for the Eva TV Series?! If Escaflowne can get 15-20 mins of interviews per disc then ADV should be able to find something worthwhile for Shinji and co's escapades
I thought I'd cheer myself up, and watch EoE. Well judging from the trailer, I thought it was going to be more straightforward than the last two eps of the TV series.
Well, were we in in shock after the first 5 minutes or what...
I'd like to read other people's views about this one. So where's this Neon Genesis/End of Evangelion story discussion thread? I did a search, but could only find threads concerning recommendations or clarifications on DoR and EoE and the series in general.

To be fair, it is reasonably straight forward for "Air", and "Sincerely Yours/My Pure Heart for You" is slightly more straightforward then eps25/6, so its more like 45mins not 5;).

I was serious :)! When I saw the epic trailer, I thought this was going to be a pay-off ending. Like when Kenshin
Finally turned Battosai on Saito Hajime's ass in the beginning of the second arc
I mean the first half of the movie
When Asuka regains her confidence, and did some serious ass whopping, that made me feel good. But I really wanted to SLAP Sinji for being so moody! And then she snuffs it... horribly moving scene. When Sinji realised what had happened, I felt like saying, your effin' fault!!
and then...
Eva unit 01 becomes the tree of life, and Sinji has to decide on the fate of humanity? Of all people? Then he wakes up next to Asuka and (attempts?) strangles her. Ok, i understand that he did not want to be alone. Is that what "Instrumentality" was all about? Combining all of life into one primordial soup, with no individual identity? He wanted identity through the AT fields, but why did he have to try and strangle Asuka. After all, it seems as she's the only other person on earth, and he DID, erm, you know, over her.
Sorry for all the spoiler tags. Just in case!

Haven't seen Kenshin, so can't comment, but surely after eps 21-24 you knew that whatever panned out, it wasn't going to be happy clappy fun times by the end;). You seem to have got a reasonable grasp of the fundamentals, http://www.evaotaku.com has a nice FAQ which explains things strickly by cannon sources, thus it can't by definition explain everything, theres a million and one cod Eva theories which try to explain everything, but that kinda misses the point IMO;).Originally posted by Purpledump

Well actually, EVA-01 was encased in bakalite(phew, who knew that melted down phones could be so strong;)), so there was no way he could get in the plug. Thus actually, the couple of minutes he may have arrived sooner if he didn't whine so much wouldn't have made any difference.
Oh, and its indeterminate whether Asuka actually died here. Yes EVA-02 was ripped apart and was skewered by loads of fake lances, and the pilot feels the same injuries via neural feedback or whatever, but as long as the plug remained intact, its not cetain that she died. If however you (validly) believe that she did die, you have your own answer to the last question I pose;).

Fundamentally, the first half of EoE was a battle for control of 3rd impact, between Ikari Gendo and Seele. But Rei, who has the soul of Lilith remember, did not give the choice to Gendo, but instead to Shinji.

Exactly, AT fields maintain identity, but at the cost of keeping others out, afterall, you can never truely know what another person is thinking/feeling. Shinji rejected the false paradise of instrumentality/3rd impact, realising that although that brought everyone together, since there was no individuals in a sense noone was there.

but why did he have to try and strangle Asuka. After all, it seems as she's the only other person on earth, and he DID, erm, you know, over her. Well he didn't have to, he has free will;). Remember, he did this in the dreamscape earlier on. At this point he wasn't sure whether he was back in the real world or not, he was just trying to affirm that it was reality sort of, literally trying to grasp reality. Oh, note Asukas eye bandage, and note how this is the same eye she was bleeding out of after the lance through the head(you may not have noticed due to the dark lighting, but when she was holding her head in her hands at this point, theres blood pouring between the fingers of her left hand). Also remember, it was said that anyone could return if they wanted to, thus the actual earth population is unknown, IMO its unlikely that its just those 2. There were billions of people pre 3rd impact, so even if only 1% of people chose to return thats still 10's of millions. A more fruitful question is could Ritsuko or Misato come back? They died pre 3rd impact, but they did have a vision of Rei appear as they died, just like everyone else did as their AT fields collapsed. Theres no official answer to this last question;).
To fix the quote and spoiler tags messing up in confusing ways;)
Thanks for the helpful reply, Mr Nice. It does clear up a couple of points in a logical way. Must've taken you ages to quote each individual spoiler question :).
By the way -
Yes, I forgot about "anyone can return if they wanted to". Everything seems to fall into place including why asuka would be bandaged, except... WHO bandaged Asuka? :)
I need to check out some of the Eva faqs when I have time. Thanks for the link.

Heh, see the [ /b ][ /quote ] you probably see at the top of a lot of my posts where I quote? Thats part of my trick to make it easier which I often forget to "houseclean" away;). I copy/paste the close of a quote to the top, then copy of the close/start, then wherever I need to break a quote its just paste and wollah;). On the laste one I incuded a [ /spoiler ] ... [ spoiler ] in it;).

I need to check out some of the Eva faqs when I have time. Thanks for the link. Aha, cunning question, which they kind of answered themselves when they were fixing an animation error earlier;). Remember when Shinji got absorbed by Eva-01? He went in in his school uniform but it was his plug suit they found in the plug, whoops;), so they made Ritsuko explain it by LCL being able to essentially "make" clothes, the same way a soul, together with its AT field, "makes" the body out of LCL. So essentially, you can assume that the bandages came with the clothes because she needed them when she reformed herself out of the LCL;). So thats one possible explanation. Apparently the original script for EoE had them reform naked however, and Asuka bandaging herself afterwards, so you can believe that version if you want, but I have no idea where they would get bandages or clothes on the beach, so I prefer the LCL explanation myself;). I suppose its vaguely like that "residual self image" thing in the Matrix, so thats another film you can accuse the Matrix of ripping off;)
Just thought I'd mention, that I find it quite interesting that considering what we learn the AT field to actually be, that in one of those almost subliminal flash cards the title sequence of the series is full of, it says that AT stands for Absolute Terror.
Mr. Nice covered most of this well, but to chime in my own opinion.

Interestingly, if you ever read Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's comic book version of Eva (its very different in places, but equally as interesting) he had Kaji come straight out state that it was entirely Shinji's fault that Toji got crippled, as if Shinji hadn't more-or-less ran from the encounter he may have been able to save him without Gendo using the dummy plug.
Which is quite true.

Ultimately, Evangelion is all about how you perceive yourself and how you want others to perceive you, and how worrying too much about will really ****** you up in the end (see His and Her Circumstances for more of this from Anno, its great stuff). Shinji realises his father is a jerk and that he doesn't need his affection, which is what he was after ultimately, whilst Asuka comes to realise that in the end that she doesn't need the praise of others, as the mother she thought had abandoned her hadn't (as such ^_^), so in the end complementation wasn't necessary. Only those which are happy both of themselves and how others see them retain their AT fields, and given that most of Nerv where headcases they all went sludgy.
Much of the TV ending runs somewhat parallel with EoE as it happens, but its arguable whether or not the ultimate conclusion is the same. I'm of the opinion that in the TV ending Shinji chose complementation and remained a pool of goop, but YMMV.
All IMHO of course.

Hmn, interesting, although at best thats just Kajis pov(I haven't read the manga so I can't comment on the context). You could just as easily blame Asuka and Rei for it for being crap at fighting it;). In the anime at least, its definitely more Gendos fault then Shinjis(IMO. For a start of course, Shinji didn't know about the dummy plug, and of course Gendo didn't answer Shinjis question about whether there was a human pilot, indicating that he personally didn't care. And Gendo could have shut down the dummy plug earlier once eva-03 was disabled, instead he left it active till Tojis plug was crushed, so I personally blame Gendo significantly more then Shinji here.

Well the entire world population "went sludgy" whether they felt like it or not, that anti-AT field was removing everyones AT field, so no one, including Shinji and Asuka "retained it",. Its only once Shinji rejected complementation that anyone else had a chance of reforming. You know that shot after Shinji rejects it of the globe with gridlines forming over it? Thats a representation of AT fields forming again(IMO of course;))
As I said, I didn't comment on things like "what Anno meant," just on the facts, or at least the narrative, where possible, I think its best people form their own opinions on the rest, and do pointless analysis of the "religious symbolism" if they must:dork:;), but for the record I agree with you about what Anno meant;).Complementation is ultimately just one big cop out, life is about interacting with other people, sure sometimes peoples feelings get hurt, but thats life, worrying about it won't help, don't worry, be happy;) "Then the AT-Fields will start hurting people again"-"I know"(non exact quote from EoE;))
