Anyone got R2 Scarface (De Palma)
Question:

Has anyone got the R2 scarface on here.
the one with the 50 min featurette(quoting play.com)
Is the transfer ok? the sound is only mono I think
I'm thinking of getting it (ok its only a tenner) I just don't
want to come back on here in a weeks time and find out there's
a better version comming along in a few months (a De Palma commentary would be unlikley but very cool)
I love this film and my VHS copy needs replacing!
Cheers

The transfer used on the R2 is totally different than the old R1 one (which was not even anamorphic) and is much, much better - buy it now!
& yes there is a 50 min Making Of
& the soundtrack is Dolby Surround according to the case
Hope this helps ;)
Lol had to edit, but it was a joy, I unwittingly spelt Dolby the classic Spinal Tap way - Dubly Surround  Now corrected

For years my copy of this was from a Channel 4 special. The transfer on the DVD is much much better than my old tape.
The sound is either DD 3.0 or 4.0 not quite sure which, with a German mono track as well.

It's a very good disk, just one problem, you'll need a crowbar to get the disk out of it's case:(

Answers:

Excellent disc (r2)
It'll probably get a re-release in r1 soon tho' the old one is OOP.
Alas if rumors are to be believe it'll contain a new soundtrack score by Jay-Z :shocker: :oh-hum:

Answers:

The Jay-Z rescore doesn't sound too likely - De Palma has said that he was approached to approve the remix and he completely rejected the idea. He might not have the final say in the matter though.

Answers:

It's an OK transfer, not outstanding. There are a lot of problems with it.

Same question for me. What I do know is there's a confirmed re-release in R1 for 2003
See here (http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=89464).
Doesn't say much, just that it's released in 2003, will be an SE is 16:9 and has a documentary. Well not much different to the current version by that, but depends what SE means.
Worst case is it could just be a re-issue to bring the R1 in line with the R2/R4 (R1 being non-anamorphic, R2/4 being anamorphic). Even more so if the current R1 is OOP.
Still waiting for this one though...
Goodfellas (2002, SE, COM [Winkler])
Unfortunately no confirmed Scorsese commentary :(.

Watched this last night (UK R2 dvd). Very good anamorphic transfer.

The transfer is fine, and the sound is 4.0 I think.
Excellent Laurent Bouzereau documentary as well, plus outtakes, etc.
What's not to like? Don't think I'll bother with the R1 special edition, there's nothing wrong with this one IMO.

Answers:

Bouzereau was talking about getting some new interviews for the updated special edition, but that was in Aug 2001 and I've heard nothing since.
Anyway, my review of the R2 for DVD Times is <a href="http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?html=y&id=reviews/region2/scarface.html"> here</a>

Answers:

The specs for the R1 SE on the DVDTalk re-release thread now indicates that it's a 2-disc  SE with a new 5.1 remix and a documentary.

Answers:

It also has the Colitos Way trailer on the R2 dvd:nuts:

Mike,
I've just read your review, and some of the points you made were exactly what I was thinking during and after watching the movie. I especially agree with the following:
In fact, the script is the biggest problem with the film. Oliver Stone writes good, snappy dialogue for Tony and the other men - their in-car conversations are a delight - but once the big speeches begin, he seems rather lost. Tony's set-piece rant to a restaurant full of WASPs is one long collection of cliches, saved only by Pacino's delivery, and when Elvira says, "Look what's happened to us", you're reminded of the old dictum that if you want to send a message, you should use Western Union. She spells out the point of the film - that Tony destroys himself and everyone around him - in unnecessary fashion, insulting the intelligence of the audience.
A totally unnecessary scene which drags on. The film would have been served better if this had been cut, or executed in a less hamfisted way.
Worst of all are the family scenes when Tony returns home to his mother and sister. His mother delivers the sort of poor-but-honest drivel that would have been considered passe back in 1932.
Tony's mother and the lines she delivers are cliche hell. I was sitting there groaning.
There's also a kinetic shoot out in a mirror covered nightclub, featuring two of the most incompetent hit men ever to grace a thriller
This scene is hilarious. They kill everyone but their target. :D
Worse still is the music score., Giorgio Moroder, erstwhile purveyor of disco-pap for films such as Flashdance, provides a score which is so dated it is, paradoxically, entirely appropriate for 1980. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the power to match the images and ends up sounding inadequate for the emotions it is supposed to be supporting.
Completely agree with this. The score is horrendous.
I think Scarface is a decent gangster movie, but is a notch below the likes of the Godfather parts 1 and 2 (especially part 2) and Goodfellas.

Well the current edition is pretty loaded. Unless you really want a NTSC tranfer I do not see the point for upgrade.

When is this R1 2 disc SE re-release coming out?

That extra disc has to be for something substantial though (or at least to make room on the 1st disc for a high bitrate transfer), and the current edition is just film + documentary + outakes. Doesn't sound particularly loaded (haven't got it myself as I was waiting for a better edition as it didn't sound that great).

It is great, oh yes !.
Now stop being a dirty little cock'a'roach and go buy!.

I'll definetly get another edition of Scarface, it was begging for it more than Goodfellas and the like, best crime movie ever!
Bad score? I guess I like bad music too, I love all the songs and Tony's theme, listen to it every other week.
The current R1 DVD has that 50min making off, it's just one of the earlier Universal collector's editions where they didn't list any extras.
