In the opening scene where that woman falls to her death, why is that old pilot bloke grinning like a moron?

The guys name is Ralph Waite - and I have never been able to work that out.
My theory is that for some reason he didn't realise that they were actually shooting the scene at that moment or something. And the scene was included since the editor just didn't notice it.
Whatever the reason, I've always found it one of the highlights of the movie..
(and to avoid padding - are there DTS versions of this in most regions? the new Korean release has, predictably, got such a soundtrack)

I think the only other dts version is the R2 Japan release...
