Blockbuster Exclusives
Question:

Bit of a wierd one. Blockbuster have a number of 'exclusives' of minor-ish (depending if you love the '80's) titles:
Pretty In Pink (£15.99)
Mannequin (£12.99)
Class (£12.99)
The Changeling (£13.99)
Cat's Eye (£13.99)
They Live (£13.99)
Coming Soon:
Pet Semetary (£15.99)
Pet Semetary 2 (£13.99)
They are exclusive to Blockbuster until the end of 2002. Am I the only one to find this a bit of a worrying development?

I guess they have to stock something seeing they're not stocking any new titles from Warner!
From what I've read though, most of the titles will be available at other retailers from the end of October.

www.play247.com have got Pet Sematary and Pet Sematary 2 listed as in stock and ready to ship, so those two at least aren't exclusive, and some of the other are listed as being released later this year.
I doubt any film company would allow their films to be exclusive to one retailer on a long term basis as it wouldn't be worth the lack of sales.

Play also have The Changeling.

Isn't it just Ocean's 11 Blockbuster (and others) won't be stocking???... or all new Warners?

All new Warners.

Hmmn!
So who will lose out? Will people 'buy' because they can't 'rent'?
I'm not a renter so won't be affected, but I can't see Warner gaining from their profiteering pricing policy.
Go Blockbuster! Make a stand!

My local one had both Cat's Eye and They Live for £15.99, but they're available from PLAY too. PLAY had They Live down for next Monday, but as said before, they shipping this week by the looks of it.

As some one else posted before, it will be interesting to see if they still manage to hold out when Harry Potter 2 is out :)

I read that Blockbuster are going after market share in the DVD retail sector - so parent company Viacom, who also own Paramount, could be giving them a few months exclusivity on certain titles. Didn't they do that with HMV a while back with the Cheech & Chong movies? I seem to remember seeing them with HMV exclusive stickers - or was that just referring to the packaging?

They Live is listed as a pre-order R2 on Play.
Looks pretty good too. :rocker:

Not sure about buying it as I enjoyed it but it is a bit corny.
Or am I missing the point with this film ?

No, it is corny and bad.
But it's a great film if you catch my drift.
This sold for loads on Ebay, as the R1 has been deleted for years, I couldn't afford the high ebay prices for this classic, and now it's coming to R2

I think what they might mean is that the titles are exclusive to Blockbusters for the RENTAL market.

Answers:

Didn't see any of those titles to rent when i popped in last night - only to buy. Methinks Blockbusters are lying about these so-called 'exclusives'.

They could have the exclusive 'retail store' rights. Perhaps they are still available to online retailers but not to High Street stores?

Answers:

Marwhite - the titles seem to be retail only.
Interesting about these being available on-line. andrew_lee may have a point. The versions of the films (e.g. Pretty in Pink) did not seem to be exclusive or special versions.
I have noticed that Blockbuster has had some pretty cheap Paramount DVD's in the past (MI:2 - 4.99, Ferris Bueller 9.99 e.t.c.) so there is seems to be a relationship between them and their sister companies.
Also, the retail part of my local store has tripled in size. They are after a BIG chunk of retail by the looks of it. Prices on back cat are still poor despite some special offers.
I am against anybody getting an exclusive because they then control the prices. Does anyone think that an ex-rental of 'Black Hawk Down' would cost 17.99 if there were multiple big rental chains operating in a local area? Big Business....phew...:oh-hum:

I dont think they are. I think we just have the rights to retail sell them before anyone else does (Like HMV did with Chasing Amy.)

I work for blockbuster and to be honest we dont get that kind of support from our sister companies. For example when save the last dance came out we only got 3 copies on dvd and about 30 on video. (cough).

Rental market is not doing to well this year. Hense the retail rollout in about 250 stores nationwide.

Some DVD Exclusives are brilliant. Some are naff. Luck of the draw I guess. :)

I went into Blockbuster last night to see if the new retail shelving that had been put out had been populated (it had). I noticed that They Live had dropped from 15.99 to 12.99. As I had my receipt from earlier in the week in my wallet, I took a case up to the counter and asked if they could refund the difference in cost - after all, it looked like I'd been overcharged in the first instance, as the price originally quoted here was 13.99.
Unfortunately I was told that this is the nature of retail, a price could drop the next day and they can't do anything about it. Still, they were nice enough to give me a free rental (I've never rented a DVD in my life!).
So tonight I'm going to go back and attempt to purchase a very obviously mis-priced X-files boxset that I noticed...:D
