Phone Booth postponed
Question:

Due to the recent sniper shootings in the US, phone booth has been postponed from it's American release in November.

Answers:

Doesn't that kinda give away the storyline?

You only have to watch the trailer to get the premise of the film.

Answers:

Maybe not then :)

I knew this would happen! :(
The only film I'm really desperate to see (and have been for 18 months now!)

Answers:

I suppose it's inevitable really - if they release now they will probably lose quite a lot of money due to people boycotting it.

That's so stupid, I'm tired of all the sensitivity. So what some guy is having some fun with a rifle and hasn't even been caught yet, he's giving everyone an example of what one can get away with and how unsafe you really are.
Phone Booth is just an entertaining movie that many have been waiting for for a while and now this. :oh-hum:

Answers:

Well his (and yours?) definition of fun differs to mine, because I don't think shooting 13 year old kids is "fun".

Weren't we dicussing the knee jerk reactions to such crimes, like postponing movies?

Answers:

some call it a knee-jerk reaction, some call it appropriate sensitivity.
does it really matter if the release date of a movie or a computer game is put back a little??????

Answers:

I really don't see how it's appropriate sensitivity, in fact I would imagine these people who do such things may very well do it for the attention, these knee jerk reactions are the worst idea as it gives these people the idea that they have even more power

its just being sensitive, nothing wrong with delaying it a little. its a movie, and i can wait a while if it means that it won't anger any families of the victims.

I'm confused now, you seem to have just contradicted yourself.

I don't think that people involved with postponement, if any, give a crap about the families. The only reason they'd delay is because there are thousands of potential sensitive customers who will not go see their movie and that could translate into a few millions of dollars in losses, so it's just a business decision.

Answers:

Lenny, i find your comments highly offensive. The news this weekend of both the snipers actions and the tragic events in Bali have been hard enough to stomach as it is without people such as yourself being utterly insensitive. Please think before you type.
:oh-hum:

Answers:

I did think and if you can't stomach the truth it's your problem, don't read bad news.
I did not say that I personally would like to have fun with a rifle like he, or that I don't care about the families, I just said how I perceive things to most likely be from their perspective so that I could rationalize it.

Sad but so, so true. Imagine the protests if Fox were to launch it now? They will wait till they still get negative publicity for releasing it but not enough to stop people going to see it

Answers:

Screenwriter Larry Cohen has made it clear that he fully supports the decision to postpone the release, and says that he's relieved that it hadn't already opened.

Will they take Dirty Harry DVD of the shelf now I wonder?

Yes, you are right Lenny. I will stop reading/watching the news as it is all just bad stuff and very depressing. In fact, wouldn't it be great if the news agencies just weeded out all the good news for us all and held the bad news back! What a great world we would live in.
Would that mean that the sniper story would be issued as good or bad news? It's bad news as he is murdering innocent people in cold blood. Then again, he's only having a bit of fun so should it be issued as good news?
Hmmmm, what do you think Lenny?

Answers:

Ok, you wanna know what I think?
It should be issued as good news, getting rid of excess population, no one is really "innocent" anyway, and they should also run adverts on the scrolling line below for The Sniper Action Figures! Each comes with a surprise rifle such as Makarov or MI95, kids are sure to love it! Collect all 5! Why not come by your local Snipers'R US franchise location and pick up a real thing for your teenaged son! Get in on the FUN! Maybe he'll shoot himself, or better yet, you and put you out of the nursing home misery where he'll definetly stick you sooner or later.
Next up DoD (DrinkOrDie) warez group members torture and execution, tonight at 9, all channels! Sponsored by DoD (Department of Defense, proudly spending 85 billion dollars annualy to keep America safe and full of weapons!)

If the film had been released before the sniper killings the press would all be blaming movies for copycat killings

Answers:

The reason I mentioned GTA Vice City earlier by the way is because a mate of mine who heard about the sniper killings who has recently played GTA3 said to me "I heard about that and thought about that Grand Theft Auto game you have, how did they get away with that?"
Still not sure how that got released myself, 18 certificate or not

Why? There's a nasty sniper in Dirty Harry? Sure the press could try to blame Dirty Harry film!
I hope they catch him soon.

Answers:

why don't they just release the film in all the other countries and set the US release date to after all the other english speaking countries. That way they'll get to see the films in the same state as us with a certain amount of wear and tear :).
Personally I blame Spike Lee for making that film Summer of Sam, after all who would have thought of that idea otherwise (aside from Son of Sam himself of course).
The best example actually would be Two Minute Warning
"A psychotic man, armed with a hunting rifle and acting alone, goes on a sniping spree and is hunted by the police and a SWAT team" which stars the defender of every american marksmans right to carry a high powered rifle with telescopic sight to defend themselves against anything they like, Charlton Heston Himself.
(Currently waiting for the release of Bowling for Columbine which will probably be delayed due to asking questions that might cause discomfort to the right people)

Answers:

Bowling for Columbine has just started up in the States in a limited release, and is diong very well indeed. Couldn't really have picked better timing if they tried...
