"Grease"
Question:

What is the sound quality like on this recent R2 release please?
I've just bought "Saturday Night Fever" and the music is brilliant.
Are the songs on "Grease" given a similar 5.1 treatment ?

Or did I read that the soundtrack is 'adequate', and a shame that the (great) songs have no depth on the DVD release?
Thanks.

I have region four Grease and am very dissapointed with the sound.
Shocking after waiting so long for the release in the first place.

Sorry to read this "shona75"...what a shame.
Aren't the music tracks dynamic enough then?
Thanks for your reply.:)

The music is a let down but the picture is excellent.Remember to buy the R1 if you know the music really well as the R2 is slightly speeded up.

I got the R1 (to get the songs at the correct speed!) but I hate the new remix (that was done for the 20th anniversary). Listen carefully to the mix-out of "you're the one that I want" - WTF did they do????!!!!! It suddenly speeds up and adds in another "woo-hoo" as it fades out!
What was so wrong with the simple fade out of the original mix ?(which isn't included on the disc)
Does this not bother anyone else at all? Really ruins the scene IMHO.

I think that would spoil it for me too Richie.
I think I'll give it a miss - any Region. Darn it :(
Thanks all.

Oddjob
you also might like to know that a proper full-on special edition will be released in 2004. The director was interviewed by dvdfile.com and he mentioned it.

Thanks for that Richie - I'll now save my pennies until then :)

R2 sound quality is IMO the poorest of virtually all of my DVD's.
I even have to turn the sub down to almost off to avoid booming bass.

I must say that I really liked the mix, and I'm considered to be over critical. The vocals are nicely separated out from the music and even though you can tell it's been messed about with a bit I found it very enjoyable. Had me jigging around the room anyway. The tonal balance doesn't seem over heavy either.

What's wrong with just leaving the original sound mix on the disc?

Answers:

The original sound is listed on IMDB as 'Dolby' which I would suppose would be stereo only. This means that to get a 5.1 track you're going to get a remix one way or another. The preferred way of doing this would be to go back to the original multi-track masters and generate a new mix that had the same feel as the original but with improved quality and the extra channels. You're bound to end up with some differences doing it this way, such as an extraneous 'who-hoo' slipping through the net. Not sure about the speeding up though. Does the track actually last longer?
The other way is to electronically generate a 5.1 mix straight from the original mix. This can sound really artificial and the sound quality can only get worse.

There's a 'script' of sorts here (http://www.angelfire.com/movies/awesomemovies/grease.txt) but it doesn't set out who says which line - just a line by line dialogue of the entire movie.
