SPIDER - Cronenberg is a genius!!
Question:

Last Friday I saw Spider at the Vancouver International Film Festival and I have good news for all you DC fans out there - this film is probably the most subtly disturbing film he has done since Deadringers. All round the performances are fantastic but Ralph Fiennes is especially brilliant. As in previous DC films the collaborations with Peter Suschitzky and Howard Shore are devestatingly effective but here they are especially unintrusive (the soundtrack being especially subtle and simple).
Man-O-Man this is such a classy film and only reinforces the fact that DC is one of the West's greatest living filmmakers.:notworthy
Anyway I just wanted to let people know:thumbs:

Well your Voluptuousness be warned that he is somewhat worse for wear in this outing but I swear to god that it would be criminal if his performance didn't secure hime some well deserved awards. I dare say however that, as with Mr Irons in Deadringers, the American Academy will shamefully ignore him because 'his' performance of a schizophrenic, while being frighteningly real, isn't the saccharined sort of success story preferred by the Academy. We'll see and I am particularly biased so this is hardly an objective opinion.

hmmm..sounds good anyway - just goes to show that Ralph Fiennes as well as being delicious eye candy, can act his socks off :)

I hated it. No time to really explain why, though.... :D

No! DC is one of the true great directors and has a unique insight when putting stories to celluloid. The man pushes the boundaries of visuals to the nth degree! :D
Haven't found a film he has done that is anything short of stupendous. A couple I haven't understood, mind you...

I didn't understand Videodrome at all - very confusing film :( (can't stand James Woods either)

Spider can also be quite confusing. In fact a lot of DC films are confusing - but then I like that in movies - it makes me have to think more about what's going on. Nevertheless I can't hack it all the time and am equally happy (if not happier) lapping up more easily digestible brain candy.

I just saw the trailer for Spider and this film really seems to be a grate one, I must say.
Does anyone know the date for the theatrical release?
By the way I'm surprised that no one here has mentioned Naked Lunch yet. DC's best film in my opinion.

Me thinks you will be a happy bunny Tiffany. Spider compares to Deadringers in so many ways but especially in it's tragedy. That said it also has many funny moments.

Cronenberg is the most consistent director currently working. I don't think he's made a bad film yet and even his lesser, confused works like "M Butterfly" are far more interesting than better films by less interesting directors. Indeed, that film is urgently in need of serious reappraisal, particularly by DC fans since it has all sorts of interesting links to his earlier work, especially "Dead Ringers".
I can't wait to see "Spider". "eXistenZ" wasn't his finest hour, although it was a lot of fun, but "Crash" is high up in my 10 best of the nineties so I'll be interested to see if DC can return to the peak of his form.

I saw Spider back in August at the Edinburgh Film Festival. Its an incredible film. Very depressing but brilliantly written, acted, directed etc. Its possibly the best thing that DC has ever done (I really need to see it again before I decide if its better than Dead Ringers). It is one of the best films I have seen in the last five - ten years and is the best film (by a very long way) that I have seen this year. Its on general release in January I believe and as its one of DC's more accesible films I hope it gets the release it deserves. Go and see it.
