Question:
I see this is released as 1.85:1 anamorphic.
Fair enough - but I've been told that the cinema release was 2.35:1 - so I'm not happy to buy it if this is correct.
Can anyone confirm whether the film, a Film 4 production, has had the aspect ratio altered for the DVD release?
Thank you.
A quick check on the IMDB (http://www.imdb.com) reveals that the film was shot in spherical 1.85:1.
The IMDB has been known to be wrong, but it's usually accurate :)
A.
The US DVD is also 1.85 so expect this is correct aspect ratio
Was released by Warner in the US and they are usually good at getting this right.
Re: Charlotte Gray, are you sure you weren't thinking of Enigma? This was shot at 2.35:1 (probably anamorphic rather than Super 35), and has been cropped down to 16:9 for the R2 and R4 releases.
The R1 is 2.35:1, but has unfortunately been mastered from a VHS tape by all accounts :nono: A Superbit version is out next year though...
A.
Thanks malcy and Anorakus.
I'll reconsider my purchase in view of your replies.
(I did see postings about "Enigma" being cropped down. It's amazing that you have to double-check these basic details. I would like to see any film in the aspect ratio that the director intended. From what you say, it's a shame it has been poorly treated on R1 too...as well as trimmed on R2 & R4.)
:)
Charlotte Gray is definitely in 1.85:1.
