Question:
Hi folks, I have been looking in the HMV sale and it is pretty uninspiring, by that I mean just the same old same old, but I came across the Nightmare on Elm street box set for £24.99 which seems pretty reasonable, although I understand it is missing some bits from the american box set, so in your opinion at this price is it worth getting ?
I'm not the worlds biggest Freddy fan but I have a great horror movie collection and it would be a shame not to have any of Wes Cravens favourite character in my collection.
Is it worth it or not ?
Hmmmm....been pondering this myself. I know that the original film was the best and that the sequels got worse and worse, but it is a good price!
I think the completist in me knows I wouldn't be happy with an incomplete boxset. I'll save the cash f0r the new Halloween boxset......
Doh!

You won't want the travesty that is the Halloween boxset either then!
Isn't it missing Wes Craven's New Nightmare, which is only available in a really pants P&S seperate version? As this is by far the best sequel for me, I think I'm gonna pass on this set, tempting price tho it is.
Sounds like a pretty good price though, for the first 5 films. Play have it for 45 quid. Plus the R2 version of the first film is uncut as well.

Are you absolutely sure about that?
I was under the impression that EiV had used the US masters to make the UK discs - thus giving us the "R" rated version rather than the uncut 18 that Fox used to put out on VHS.
I'd love to be wrong though!
The commentary should be a give-away. Surely it wouldn't stay in-sync if it runs with a different cut of the film. The scene to check (and which is talked about on the commentary by Craven) is where Tina falls from the ceiling into a pool of blood - in the cut version you hear but don't see the "splash", in the uncut version it's all there.
Get the R1 BS. It has all 7 films, looks superb and has an excellent extras disc. And, I think, someone posted it in the bargains forum for £33.50!
The box with everything in is about £45.00 (that is the U.S one) and it looks pretty good but I dont know, the thing im thinking is that like so many horror films before I will fall in love with these and realise I want the rest of them, thus having sub par versions.
That flimsy fold out box looks like it will fall apart in seconds too, but still £24.99 is pretty cheap.
Well I will know by the time the shops are shut today wether im going to get it or not.
How thrilling my life is :dork:

I stand corrected :D
Didn't realise the R2 dvd was different to the VHS.
Indeed I did post it in the bargins forum! Available from www.amazon.ca for £33.50 shipped!
for £25 its worth getting, its missing 6 & 7 but they're the weakest in the series anyway, also the packaging aint nothing special (they use graphics from NOES 7 even though its not included )
as everyone has said though, if you want to pay the extra £15 you can pickup the much better R1 boxset!
The R1 does have that excellent 'Labyrinth' extras disc too.
i say: R1 :)
A French box set will be released on October 17. It has all 7 films with all the features of the extras disc from the US version.
Get the region 1 without hesitation. I got it as my first foreign DVD purchase and I have to say, the Labyrinth has to be the best extra / easter egg ever included on DVD.
All films are in anamorphic widescreen and have DVD ROM content.
The only drawback is that it comes in a big chunky box with eight separate :shocker: snapper :shocker: cases instead of the digipak style of the EiV one
I keep wanting to get this set, but the sub-par standard of the R2 version and the fact that the R1 version would be quite expensive is what keeps holding me back. Plus I already have the first one on DVD, and Dream Warriors and New Nightmare (the best two sequels) taped off TV (shudder).
Whiggles, the Canadian version of this boxset can be purchased for £34.93, albeit from amazon.ca
Can't guarantee customs will pass you by, but if you select the slowest shipping option, especially with large orders, they usually pass you by.
Don't quite know why, tho.
You get the cool 3-D glasses with the R1 as well! :D
Bound to give you a headache though........
I love my R1 Freddy Box, very nice.

Well I got it in the HMV sale for £19.99. I know it is missing two of the Freddy films (Freddy's Dead and The Final Nightmare) but for £20 I think it was pretty good value.

Maybe they will bring another set including Freddy vs Jason and have a digipak for that. It would save on space too!, the R1 is very bulky!
