Oceans Eleven: are Blockbuster stocking it?
Question:

As per the heading...although I grudge giving Ballbuster my hard earned cash, they're the only rental outlet near me and I wondered if they would be stocking this as their is no sign of it on their web****e:thumbs:
Cheers!!

Answers:

I'm sure our kid (an employee of said company) said no as it's another one of Warner's premium titles - hence the very cheap new price.

Has anyone noticed that prominent "Not for rental" notices have started appearing on several WHV discs, like The Majestic.

You can buy Oceans 11 for £12 from www.cd-wow.com and you could probably sell it for £7 or £8 on the classifieds so it would only cost you the same as a rental.

This Warners non-rental thing is quite good i think. If you can go into a Supermarket and buy the likes of Collateral Damage/Time Machine (and O11 on 14th) for around £12.99 then it's gotta be a good thing for the punter and the DVD market in general.
At those prices you can afford an impulse buy every now and again, bit like back in the VHS days. :nostalgia:

Shirley, you can rent it from DVDOptions??
EDIT: Or in fact ask your library to get in a copy. They're not bound by those rules, I thought??

Aren't Blockbuster shooting themselves in the foot by not stocking warner titles? It seems like they are only steering people towards buying instead so Warner aren't bothered and only Blockbuster lose out?

Answers:

they also haven't stocked the majestic, time machine and y tu mama tambien.
all in my shop though!
BTW warren lieberfarb, who's a big important guy at Warner has stated he wants to drive the price of dvd so low they become impulse buys so nobody bothers with rental or pay per view. he'd like to see them next to the tills like the sweets selling for under a fiver.

I say Go Warner! For too long now we poor saps in R2 land have had to put up with too many studios (coughDisneyFoxUniversalDreamworksParamount) enforcing their dreaded rental windows on us in collusion with Schlockbuster. Schlockbuster are the enemy of all true movie and DVD fans with their insistence on not stocking widescreen titles and trying to force a rental window of plain vanilla discs, thus ensuring that the average Joe will rent out 2 titles for the weekend rather than just one and spend hours going through the special features. I don't believe we are doing enough to combat this state of affairs. For myself, i promised not to buy a single Fox, Paramount, Disney or Universal title in R2 (even bargains or back catalogue) until the rental window is abolished, and i stand by that still. And now finally Warner have realised it should be the consumer's choice to rent or buy, and have started to stick it to these dweebs. Go Warner! :D

Answers:

fox, paramount, disney and universal aren't alone in the retal windows, EIV tried it recently with gosford park and are expected to do more in the future, momentum have just announced they will start with rental windows. helkon sk decided to dump warner and go it alone so they could continue windows and mgm are rumoured to be thnking about it.
that said there are rumours in the indutry that 2 of the other major studios -most likely paramount and disney- will be switching to the warner method shortly. if true it could mean three major studios blockbuster would have to boycott to keep this up!

If Blockbusters shoot themselves in the foot i think that would be a good thing, might encourage more of us to use our local libraries where you can rent most new titles for around £2 a week.

I am with Chief Brody.
Frankly this has always looked like BB trying to convince us that they deserve to take money off us. Very evil... *little finger to corner of mouth*

Mind you - if Warners were really "champions of the consumer", they's make their Friends releases a whole lot cheaper...

The whole issue that I can see that BB have over this is that we are not allowed to buy Retail versions of the movie. We have to buy Rental versions.
I do also believe we have to pay more for the Rental versions than retail and they dont become our property for 8 weeks even through we paid for them.
Thats what I believe its over.
For example if we wanted to clear out our copies of say 'Get Carter' because we took to many copies and its not renting we wouldnt be able to for 8 weeks from the day of release. (I guess as to not to harm the Retail Launch.

Blockbuster would never not stock rentals by Paramount as its part of the same company.

Did you see this article on R2 Project

shows it is more profitable for Warner to do this as they sell more as people buy rather than rent.
If only the other studios would follow

Why have companies bothered with rental windows for so long then?

It used to be a very profitable way to make money
You'd make money by the following
Cinema Release.
Rental Release.
Retail Release.
Of course the rental trade has slid quite a bit this year (which is why alot of rental stores (inc blockbuster)) are moving into retail were there are more profit margins.

Answers:

Are BB selling the retail versions at their stores ?
Just out of curiosty sake.
Im gonna continue buying the Warner releases from DVD Soon..
v. cheap.
But this attack by Warner on the rental market is a good move.
Whats the legal position?
Being 'in the law' I cannot see what they can do if you rent out a sale copy (as my local shop does).
If you buy them from a wholesaler, like S. Golds for instance, what can Warner do to the shop ??
Or is there some sort of daft consumer warning with a phone number before the film starts
Bet nobody remembers the Intervision pre-recorded video cassette voucher that hirers had to fill out, every time you hired a United Artists Intervision title.
If you didnt see it, there was number to phone, given on the tape, and if you 'shopped' the shop, you got a 3hour tape free. !!

it is against european laws of some sort to rent out things without the permision of the copyright owner. nintendo this week announced that they will be allowing people to rent their games for the first time ever, funny as we've had n64 games since they came ou and gamecube stuff too. they've never really cared about enforcing it, warner on the other hand claim to have a sneaky squad of people to go and check if they get the word you're renting the retail versions.

No they are not. We dont currently stock any new warner products. Once the ones in the stores sell they will not (currently) be replenished.
But this attack by Warner on the rental market is a good move.
I dont know wheither its a good thing or bad thing. From a personal point of view I think its a fair point that warner are trying to maximise their profits. But I dont think they're acting fair in the way they have shafted rental stores (weither they are blockbuster or not).

Ahh. That would explain why we never got Super Mario sunshine in to rent last week. I wait with baited breath!
