Gremlins 2 - R1 question
Question:

Finally got round to watching my R1 release of Gremlins 2. Very good transfer, and it was nice to see the extra scenes put in the movie (not as deleted scenes) that were not on the UK video release.
One thing I noticed was that the film starts with the English subtitles on by default. Is this normal for this disc? Plus at the end of the movie the copyright screen comes up, but only in Japanese (I think). Makes me wonder if these 2 things are perhaps a carry over from a remastering from a Japanese laser disc

Answers:

No subtitles here, didn't notice the copyright screen though.

Answers:

It's because the disc is dual encoded R1 and R2(for the japanese market).
The disc is picking up your player's default region and defaulting to Japanese as a result. If you can manually change your player - set it to region 1 before playing.

Thanks for the feedback.
I have a quite old Sony 525 multi-zone player, and as far as I know I can't set it to R1 manually. So I guess it is picking up the Japanese region by default.
I will just have to remove the subtitles by hand until I get a new player.

Be aware that Warners US seems to encoding lots of their catalogue titles in this manner. R1/R2 and R4 I think.
Recent titles affected are Innerspace, Exorcist II:The Heratic and Gremlins 1 and 2.

Or play another R1 disc before you put Gremlins in. This way the player should already be set to Region 1, and the disc should play normally.

Do you mean the scene in the cinema? This was in the original theatrical release but was replaced on the VHS release (I presume in the US as well) with a video-themed gag which unfortunately wasn't anywhere near as good. I was very relieved they used the cinema version for the DVD. :)

It is the cinema scene starring Hulk Hogan. The video scene featuring John Wayne vs. Gremlins is an easter egg that can be found by clicking on the Gremlins hand on the special features menu.
