brotherhod of the wolf r1 v r2
Question:

iv just checked out the r1 canadian version and the r2 uk version and i have to say that the pic quality of the r2 is far more superior. the r1 dts french s/track is of course far more superior to the english 5.1 dub track by a long way but the subtitles on the r1 look terrible as they cover far to much of the screen, thus spoiling the the majesty of the pic.the subs on the uk disc are much better placed but of course u only get a dd2 french s/track.its a travesty really also the uk version is the theater cut where as the r1 canadian is the dc cut. well people make your choice.

Answers:

Cad R1. By a mile. By three miles even. Picture looks fine to me.

Answers:

yea its good but not as good as u think beleive me i could point things out to you that u would notice and yea i agree the sound track is great. by the way forget the extras for a momment cos thats not the issue im discussing, the sub titles look bloody awfull they really do. you cant tell me surley that writing all over the bottom of the screen in crappy looking text dosnt spoil the image that your looking at.but yes as i said before i agree nothing can touch the french dts s/t,just a shame the subs wernt better thought out.

Answers:

It's nothing to do with the soundtrack fer me, it's cos it's the dc. The subtitles also look fine to me. And all the extras to top it off. Tis a great set.

well all i can say is in my own oppinion that the pal pic without subs looks 10 times better than an ntc one withe subs still, its good to debate these things.

At first I thought the R1 colour was off but then I switched to RGB and it improved . I love the DTS soundtrack and a stereo version of the french on the r2 seemed a pity the sound is so good.I had the french verssion before but I am enjoying it even more now that I have the subtitles especially on the extras.
Are the versions the same? The R1 includes the scene at the docks and the 2 women meeting in the church?

Answers:

I got the rental version from my local store which was selling it for £9. as far as I can see both these scenes are present:)

I've posted a review of the 3-disc Canadian version, which compares it to other available versions here:

There's 4 versions at DVD Soon.
2 of each are shown as VF (French version) I presume these are the same as the English versions there, as they are the same price.

ive just got the 3 Disk Canadian.
it certainly does look grainy especially on my monitor, but my TV is pretty good for grain. But it still has a very sharp picture and colours looks great.
havent checked out the DTS cos i dont have the system.

Thanks for that, saved me starting a new thread asking about scenes I thought were missing from the R2 version.
I got the three disc edition from amazon.ca yesterday. The colour seemed a tad too bright, but it didn't pose any problems really. The subs never bothered me and the soundtrack kicks ass.
I liked the menus too. I've seen any quite like that before.

This is driving me nuts!
I love this film, and want the best possible DVD version of it, with great picture, sound and extras. Is this too much to ask? But every release seems to have problems.
The R2 UK releases have reasonable extras, but the French audio soundtrack is only Dolby Digital 2.0 format.
The R2 French Releases have great picture sound and extras... but no English subtitles.
The R1 USA Release has great picture and sound, but disappointing extras and badly presented subtitles.
The R1 Canada Release has great extras and sound, but disappointing picture quality (due to edge enhancement, over-saturated colours) and badly presented subtitles.
Is this a fair summary of the situation?!?! Have I got anything wrong here?
Has anyone got any screenshots of these 'badly presented subtitles' so I can judge for myself whether this is someone being really anal, or a genuine criticism!?
And is the picture quality on the Canadian R1 version really that bad... in which case which version has the best picture??!
I'm off to stab myself in the brain with a fork... thanks for your help :-)
Floop :shocker:

Answers:

no the Canadian is not at all 'bad'
its a little grainy, but still very crisp and colourful.
and im watching on a PC at the mo, which brings out the worse in transfers.
and yes the subtitles did look a bit Hong Kong standard, but that doesnt bother me and if it does bother you, thats just nit picking.

isn't the R2 UK version non-anamorphic, as well as only having a DD2.0 Frech track?

Answers:

if you have the right equipment you must get the dts version.this is one of the best soundtracks i have ever heard.the dubbed 5.1 version pales in comparison.i also found no problem with the picture or the placement of the subtitles.
