Question:
Having waited with baited breath for the HKL release of this Jackie/Sammo/Yuen spectacular, I was disappointed to find that the 1st DVD I bought had a problem @ the menu screen, in that it froze on 7sec & wouldnt allow any access to any of the menu content, damn!!
Thinking that it must be the particular disc Id bought I went into HMV this afternoon & exchanged it for another copy. I hurried home & popped it in the DVD player (Wharfedale 750s) & fired it up, &........................................................ god damn it the same problem, Aaaaarrggghh!!
So it looks like it might be a pressing problem with the disc, what do you think I should do now? I could just take it back to HMV & get a refund, but I want to see this particular film.
Any suggestions welcomed.
Thanks

This happened to me for Project A and Police Story 2 on PowerDVD on my PC dvd drive. But I put (shudder) interactual player on and it worked.
It's probably a player problem...

Unfortunately I only have 1 player to test it on [Wharfedale 750s], but with no word of anyone else having problems, I suppose it maybe a player incompatibility issue. :(
My copy of My Lucky Stars played fine on my Sony player, may be your player :(
damn i have a 750s, well not exactly but i think its a 750s inside :(
I didnt't have no problem on my dvd player.
Classic film.:rocker:
I've had no problem on my Sony 525.
Any news on when Winners and Sinners will get released by HKL ?
Damn... This doesn't work on my Wharfedale 750S either... I'm going to go to their website to see if I can find a contact email address...
I've just found that if you stop it in the 7 seconds that you can before it freezes, you can "Goto" chapter 1, title 1 of the disc and the film will play. Not ideal, but I'll be trying HKL anyway!

Ahhh crap if Id known this before trading it Id have at least seen the film. At least I got a good trade for it anyway (Black Hawk Down R2  )
Thanks for all replies peeps, appreciated!!
i have a Minato G1, which i think is a 750s inside, though ive known some discs that dont work on the 750s to work on my player.
i wonder if it does.
but if i do that stop before 7 seconds thing, that is fine by me as long as i can watch the film.

Shame she wasn't more helpful now though...
"Hi Tony, here is what our technical dept has to say.
We have investigated this problem and it basically comes down to the compatibility of the DVD player he is using. wharfedale is known as a problem DVD player because of its 'low' price tag, certain mechanisms are flawed.
Simply putting it this machine will struggle to play certain DVD's, and this is simply down to the way the DVD player is built and not a fault with an actual DVD."
So then... It's my ****** fault. I'm sorry for troubling you HKL, and for giving you so much of my money for defective products...
:brickwall
i know the 750 had a few problems, but isnt the 750s supposed to be very good compatibility wise ?
i have not had one problem with it yet, thats assuming my player is actually a 750s, (Minato G1)
It's the second disc I've had problems with (the first being the feature-intense Beastie Boys Criterion) and I felt kind of insulted by their response. Perhaps their DVD's should now carry a warning along the lines of "The DVD will only play on players that cost £500 or above"...:oh-hum:
the beastie boys criterion wouldn't play nice with my old bush player, so i bought a new one.
to be fair this disc does seem to play fine on most players (does so on both my pioneers) and the wharfdales are known for their problems -many thanks from tesco go out to watchdog:D - so i don't think HKL reply was entirely unjustified.
At the end of the day you get what you pay for with DVD players, if you want a hassle free dvd playing life then i'm afraid you're gonna have to fork out around £300 for a decent player (pioneer656 for instance).
But also at the end of the day the DVDs by the big studios rarely have problems playing & so some of the blame has to be footed at companies like HKL, Mei Ah, Universe etc for not producing discs that play fine in all players. I know they don't have the money that companies like Fox or New line do, so I'm prepared to cut em a little slack on this matter.
what about Toshiba plyers ? dont even the higher models still have problems ?
All dvd players are built to industry standard (even the cheapo ones). If a dvd refuses to play it is entirely the fault of the dvd distributor.
Get a sony model is my advice, or a Pioneer.
I too was under the impression that all machines and discs that carry the DVD logo have to be made to set standards, which is why Di$ney always put their "Di$ney DVD" logos on instead (and I've just noticed that my Beasties Criterion doesn't have a DVD logo on it). Also, the Wharfedale problem was to do with the 750, which is why thay brought out (and I purchased) a 750S.
Karate Kid - Care to buy one for me? :D
sorry in advance for upcoming vagueness:)
i remember reading an article recently (somewhere) about how the dvd people (standards commitee?) were changing the way the whole dvd logo thing worked as too many companies from the far east weren't meeting the standards on both disc and player manufacture but still using the logo. i think they might have made it a trademark or something so you can only use it with proper permission.
so the genereal gist of this is, yes all players and discs are supposed to meet the standard but many with far eastern insides don't.
I have a 750 and My Lucky Stars plays fine on it.
Fan-bloody-tastic... The old version (which couldn't even play The Matrix or Jaws) plays it, but the new version doesn't... :brickwall :brickwall :brickwall
