Canadian 4 Disc LOTR
Question:

Apologies for another LOTR post, but I thought I'd throw this one out...
I want to order the Canadian version of LOTR 'cos it can invariably be had slightly cheaper than the US version. I'm not bothered about bi-lingual covers, but on alt.video.dvd the question was raised as to whether one of the audio tracks on the R1 US would have to be dropped on the Canadian disc to make way for the obligatory French track, seeing as the DVD spec *apparently* only provides for a maximum of seven audio tracks on a disc (all of which are used up in the case of LOTR).
Before I order, therefore, I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. I don't want to end up getting fleeced out of an isolated score (a likely candidate for the chop, I'd imagine, if space has to be made for a French track) or some other such bonus on the US disc for the sake of a few pounds.

Answers:

Good point. Anyone?

Answers:

Have just checked amazon.ca site as I ordered it from them yesterday and it clearly states 4 commentary tracks.Hope this helps.

Answers:

I believe they have dropped the English DD2.0 Soundtrack for a French DD2.0 Soundtrack.

Answers:

Yep kanedaa is correct.. as they did with the original Theatrical LOTR they just take the DD2.0 and replace with French 2.0 also it reflects this in the Sound menu..
Personally i'ved got both versions and the US looks better in terms of the cover.. The spine is horrible for the Can ver.. but you aren't bothered so i won't go on.. Still looking forward to this what looks to be one of the best Special editions done..

Answers:

Yes, but there is *no* stereo track to drop/swap on this release. Four commentaries, two audio tracks (DD 5.1 and DTS EX) and two isolated tracks (score and sf/x) are your lot - and that makes eight, the maximum number of tracks you can have on a disc.
Therefore, *if* a French track is on the Canadian release it will have to drop one of the above, no?

Answers:

Aha now you metion it i read somewhere that they (Alliance Atlantis) are dropping a Commentary to make way for the french Track (******* off canadians also)
That's the problem with Alliance atlantis - they try to please everyone (inc those <1% French only speaking minority) but just end up ******* "everyone" off

Answers:

Well even if a track is dropped, it'll be either the score or SFX and not the commentaries or DTS track. I can well do without the SFX track ;)

Answers:

and will it be bi-lingual, does anyone know? cheers (the cover i mean)

Answers:

hmmm, New Line & Alliance REALLY need to issue a thorough press release on this one!!
Alegol1983 - you said 7 tracks max in your first post, 8 tracks max in your second :D
I think where the confusion has probably began is with the latest specs The Digital Bits posted. Why? Read on...
Official Site, and the picture of the rear cover artwork (www.dvdtown.com have it here (http://www.dvdtown.com/images/cover/screen_shots/10085.jpg) ) say this release will have....
English DTS6.1, DD5.1, DD2.0 Soundtracks
Four Audio Commentaries
Total of 7 Audio Tracks
Yesterday www.thedigitalbits.com reported a different set of tracks...
English DTS6.1, DD5.1 Soundtracks
DD5.1 Isolated Score, DD5.1 FX Only
Four Audio Commentaries
Total of 8 Audio Tracks
If the new specs are correct then they're gonna have to drop one of the extra feature audio tracks for a French language track. Though those specs go against everything yet revealed about this release.
On this thread (different forums) (http://www.canadiandvdgroup.com/cgi-bin/YaBB/YaBB.pl?board=DVDGeneral&action=display&num=1033616471) someone says they've spoken to Alliance who say no changes to packaging will be made.

Uh...so I am fallible after all. :( :)

Yeah, but I'd bet on The Digital Bits having it pretty much nailed, besides - on a film score message board the webmaster of Howard Shore's (LOTR's composer, for those who don't know) official website confirmed the isolated score...so that at least is true.
it'll be either the score or SFX and not the commentaries or DTS track. I can well do without the SFX track
Yeah, I can do without the SFX track as well TBH, but I would certainly be dismayed to lose out on the isolated score.

Answers:

The Digital Bits is now reporting that the discs will not have the isolated score and effects tracks, leaving the audio track count at 6.

Answers:

Good news then for us Canadian preorderers! :p

Will the extras have unremovable french subtitles?

Answers:

I doubt they'll even HAVE subtitles

Answers:

Ive looked at this at Amazon.ca
Will they supply the Canadian or US version ?
The image they use is identical at both sites, as is the ASIN number (whatever that is)
The price however, is less at Canada (£15.20 + ship)

Answers:

They're a Canadian store, you'd kinda imagine they'd supply the Canadian version.
Shame about the isolated score, but the set looks so good otherwise that a small dissapointment can be easily overlooked.

Never seen that yet on a Hollywood release so certainly don't expect it to start now

Answers:

So what are people doing? Sticking with the Canadian version or changing to the USA version?

Answers:

I think I'll be keeping my Canadian order seeing as I have absolutely no use for DD Surround track and knowing the packaging will be identical

I'm pretty sure the cover will be bilingual. New Line titles are distributed by Alliance Atlantis in Canada. All AA releases have bilingual covers. Amazon.ca's data is not accurate.

Answers:

Again with the inaccurate information :nono:
Not ALL Alliance titles are bilingual. If the DVD has a French track, then it's billingual.
We'll wait and see if the set is bilingual soon enough :D

Digitalbits are reporting that the isolated music and effect tracks have now been dropped to save space.
So packaging aside (doesn't bother me) it's no brainer - canadian all the way!

Does anyone know whether or not CD-WOW will be supplying the Canadian or US version? I've emailed them to ask, but haven't heard back from them.

Cheers. I read that too, but there was some question on another thread (couldn't find it earlier) as to whether that was correct.
It's not unusual for DVD retailers to get specs incorrect, is it? ;)

Answers:

Lads, lads, I have just looked at he CD-WOW site and the blurb for LotR 4 discs reads:
Certificate: 13 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Category: Action & Adventure
No. of Discs: 4 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Running Time: 210 minutes
Year Produced: 2002 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Audio: English - Dolby 5.1 Surround EX
Aspect Ratio: TBC . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anamorphic: Yes
Encoding: NTSC . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Region: 1 (USA/Canada)

So it doesn't look like the US version after all.

That is simply the phrase used on a lot of R1 sites to fully describe that DVD region :p

Well I received this reply yesterday, so it looks promising.
