Question:
Watched this film just now. What jolly good fun!. Michael Caine is very good (very similar in style to his Abberline role in the Jack The Ripper TV series). Ben Kingsley is also a treat. For a film I had never heard of until this week, it appears to have had a rarther large budget.
Excellent atmosphere of Victorian London and Baker Street. The story tells of how Dr Watson (Ben Kingsley) is the real detective behind Sherlock Holmes (Who's really an actor - Reginald Kincade - hired by Watson to be holmes). They tackle a big case where the British Empire's economy is at risk. Moriarty has stolen the plates for the Royal Mint's Five pounds and begins to create fogeries with the aid of a kidnapped official from the mint.
Quite funny in bits, very funny in others. Michael Caine really illustrates his film 'presence' in this film. Its no Oscar-winner, its not full of action, there's no sex but its a great way to fill 102 minutes.
The odd part played by minor British celebrities also helps the films pace. Can you spot Casualty's Clive Mantle?, or Eddie's fat friend from Bottom? or what about Rab C Nesbitt? or even the guy who played John Nettely in the BBC's Jack the Ripper TV series as mentioned above.
Very delightful (and I dont often use such a old-fashioned family word like that). The shoot out scene is also very good.
C'est La Marvello! 8/10
bravo, encore un fois!
~ Whats more its in the HMV October clearout for a mere £4.99!!!
A really enjoyable film. As you said, no Oscar winner, but good fun all the way through. I didn't know it was in the HMV sale, so thanks, i'll check my local one today. :)

Is that VHS? AFAIK it’s still only out on DVD as part of the Caine boxset. Fantastic quality print though and a cracking little film.
Its out on DVD under the 'Silver Collection' like Made in Britain and Educating Rita. It is very good quality sound and picture too.

Nice one - will have to pick that up! Not seen it for years.
Used to have it on tape and cracked up every single time at Holmes' 'Arty Morty' revelation :notworthy
Love this film, I've seen it loads of times, bought the DVD for a fiver in HMV the other day.
Wow!! It's on DVD?? Cheers. HMV after work for me!!! :D :D :D :D
Hang on - Play have it listed as 4:3!!!
Shirely that's not the OAR??? IMDB doesn't say. No way I'm buying open matte/pan & scan evilness. :( :( :(
Worry not TheoGB, it is W/S approx 1.85:1 and a very clean print too.

It's not anamorphic, though, is it?
You can never tell for certain with Carlton, who are still making new non-anamorphic transfers for some movies, and not for others.
It's not anamorphic, but it's such a good print (plus the price), I'm not complaining.
Aw hell...I hate non-anamorphic stuff. It just looks lame on my 16:9 TV. :(
Well I got a copy and it is a damn fine non-anamorphic print. It's also still hilarious!!:)
"I've got it!!!!
His real name is Arty Morty!"
Quality film - must head down to HMV to investigate this.
I think its more 1.66 than 1.85 and is letterboxed. Zooming on my w/s TV at 14.9 it fills the screen to the top but at 16.9 you loose a bit at the top & bottom but fill the full screen.
Also was pleased to find at HMV sale as Play about a month ago said the disk was only available in the boxset and the single disk was unavailable.
