MotelHell is a delightful black comedy starring Rory Calhoun as Farmer Vincent, a producer of quality meat products that have a rather unusual ingredient............humans!!!
Vincent and his sister Ida run a motel and as a sideline they they set traps for passing motorists, and keep them alive until they are ready for the pot( one victim being John Ratzenberger star of Cheers). Vincent slits their vocal chords and buries them up to their necks in his secret garden. but he's really all heart, he hypnotizes them before killing them so they don't suffer!
Things start to unravel for the siblings when Vincent allows Terry, one of his young female victims to live. Ida becomes jealous and cousin Bruce (the local Sherif) falls in love with her.There is a great finale to the film, as Vincent attacks Bruce with a chainsaw while wearing a pigs head! But he has one last confession to make....it seems all these years he had been a hypocrite, he had been using..................preservatives, lol
Good performances all around, but Calhoun stands head and shoulders above all as the seemingly kind hearted mass murderer.
Picture quality is (sorry to wheel out this old chestnut) probably as good as this film has ever looked. Sound quality is also fine.

Deranged is another black comedy, but this time much darker than Motel Hell due to the fact that it is based on the true story of Ed Gein. But unlike Silence Of The Lambs and Texas Chainsaw Massacre this film sticks pretty close to the facts.
Ezra Cobb is a small town loony, whose mother has convinced him that all women are disease carrying whores who are not to be trusted. When his mother dies Ezra becomes lonely, so does what any self respecting nutter would, he digs her up!However her decaying corpse needs replacement parts so he resorts to more grave-robbing and eventually murder.
The only comedy to be had here is in the fantastic central performance of Roberts Blossom, the look on his face as Maureen seduces him during a seance is hilarious.
This was one of Tom Savinis first jobs as make-up artist, unfortunately about one and a half minutes of gore has been removed. This showed Ezra scoop out an eyeball with a spoon, then do likewise with the brain. However one scene which was missing from the UK Exploited vhs release of a couple of years ago, is present here. It involves Ezra gutting his final victim, and blood pouring over her breasts. This is a big no-no with the BBFC and was excised from the Exploited release.
At first glance the picture is a little washed out, but when compared to the afore mentioned Exploited release, it is a revelation. There is virtually none of the print damage which ruined the video and the ever present background hiss is no longer there.
Despite the missing footage from Deranged, this is a must have disc. Hell, two fantastic films for under £10 what more could you want?
