K-19: The Widowmaker
Question:

Saw this last night thanks to a couple of free tickets...
Tells the tale of a Russian submarine in 1961 - height of the Cold War - and its mission to test fire a ballistic missile to show the Americans that their cities were under just as much risk as those of the Russians.
Liam Neeson isn't the best fit for his role as captain/executive officer of the boat, but Harrison Ford works really well as overall captain.
Great mix of tension with bursts of action (just don't expect torpedos in the water style action), the usual submarine cliches - taking it down deep and listening to the sub creaking - but for all that you never really sit there and think 'oh god not again'.
I'm glad somebody had the balls to make this movie and show the 'other' side and how they worked to avoid armageddon just as we did, and the sort of bravery their guys had.
It isn't perfect by a long chalk but it's far superior to Crimson Tide for instance. Not as good as Das Boot but what is? It does leave a few loose ends too... such as...
What happened to the chap who dived overboard?
What happened to the commissar and the other chap who mutinied?
And most importantly, are there actually photos in existence showing the whole crew mooning the American helicopter?

Answers:

You forgot to mention it's a Kathryn Bigelow film, the smartest, most beautiful director alive :o
It's definetly better than U-571 and is very intense and well acted, envelops you in that sense of doom.
It's one of the biggest bombs these past few months, along with excellent Ecks vs Sever. People just like their dumb Goldmembers, you know, nothing really entertaining or thought provoking.

Mmmmmmm.. saw this last week too thanks to free tickets.
I thought Liam was better than Harrison - although I had warmed to Harrison by the end (probably just got used to the dodgy accent by then!).
The bursts of tension and action were good - some excellent sound too, definately pushed the poor UCI Bracknell to its limits - my problem was the way you kept getting thrown back to harrowing reality, almost made you feel guilty for enjoying the previous few scenes of Hollywood / CGI coolness.
Not sure I've explained that well - put it like this, it isn't a happy film!
