Question:
I recall a thread here a while back regarding putting the Miyazki films into order..(my lurker status means I cant quite recall how long ago it was, but I'm sure it was last couple of months)..I think the general consensus was that Castle Of Cagliostro was best but Princess Mononoke was considered to be his worst.
I recently ordered "castle" in the play.com sale to see "what the fuss was about".
Granted, I havent seen the other films mentioned but I can't say I see why "Castle" is superior to "Mononoke". I think I would tend to prefer "Mononoke" myself.
"Mononoke" has a more epic feel to it, wheras "Castle" came across to me as a slapstick movie.
I guess it's horses for courses, really, but epic films seem to stay with me longer than comedy films.
I do have to say, I prefered Lupin as a main character, he seemed to have more depth and was the "Cheeky Rogue" rather than the straight laced A****aka.
My list.
1. Laputa. Castle in the Sky
2. Porco Rosso
3. Castle of Cagliostro
3. Nausicaa
(both joint. I have yet to see the complete version of Nausicaa. I own the butchered english version ''Warriors of the Wind''. It is missing almost 20 minutes of footage)
5. My neighbour Totoro
6. Princess Mononoke
7. Kiki
Spirited Away. I have yet to see Miyazaki's latest offering as the Region 2 Jap copy does have the niggling red tint on it. Plus iam skint at the moment.
TV Series. Future Boy Conan. Also yet to see this groundbreaking series. I do believe the Italian version contains the original japanese soundtrack, whereas the french release does not. Still no english subs either. You can download the scripts from certain sites. I don't know where to purchase the DVD's for the italian release. Yamamoto Video distribute them but there website does not list them for some reason.
Castle is so fantastic because it is so lighthearted. Miyazaki is at his best when directing like this.
Any way each of his films would be in my Top 100 movies of all time. He is afterall a genius
Cheers MVT.

i prefer Mononoke to Castle of Cagliostro (even tho it's relatively similar to Laputa which is my favourite!?)
.. and even tho i like them both neither are in my top 5 of Miyazaki films!

I think your memory is playing funny games with you and mixed up Laputa: castle in the sky with Castle Of Cagliostro because from the lists on the above thread (or see sig below) it was actually either one of Laputa or totoro being the most popular Miyazaki work.
Both Castle of Cagliostro and Princess Mononoke are excellent. I don't see why either has to be rated higher then the other, just accept that they're both fantastic at 2 opposite ends of the scale.
Looking forward to Laputa - just shipped yesterday from Japan.

Where have you ordered from?
If it was from CDJAPAN how come it is shipping already.
Wish mine was.
Amazon
I have a copy on it's way from Amazon also :)

Not only is it missing footage, the story itself is completely different. I have an old fansub copy of Nausicaa and have to place it pretty highly in my own list of Miyazaki films. Warriors of the Wind is a good enough film, but the story bears little resemblance to Nausicaa itself. There was talk of a DVD release of Warriors last year, to cash in on the growing popularity of all things Ghibli in the west. I'd certainly buy it.
It's such a shame that Conan hasn't been released in English yet - it really is a cracking series (my only foray into Arr-Jim-Lad territory was picking up a dodgy subtitled copy of this).
Does anyone know when those nice people at IVL ( Hong Kong ) will release a more wallet friendly R3 version of Laputa?
Cheers
Simon
Japanese (2) disc was only £19 plus shipping - not an horrific price by any means.

Jesus. I payed £30 quid for mine from Cdjapan.
Maybe i should use someone else. You think?
Nothing like being rippppppped off.
It is the best Miyazaki feature though. Must remember to stop watching DVD's, it is ruining my life.
