Halloween boxset - hour long John Carpenter docu?
Question:

This 'exclusive' new extra in the Halloween boxset version of "Halloween" - the one hour documentary on John Carpenter, what is it? what's the content of the docu like?
It's not Mark Kermode's excellent "The night he came home" docu by any chance is it?
I really hope ABUS put that on their "ultimate" ultimate release of Halloween next year!
cheers for any clues!
Richie

Is there gona be a re-release of the halloween boxset because of the new release of "Ressurrection" and the one hour documentary your refering to, is it not contained in the present boxset?

Answers:

um, the boxset is out in the UK this week (and for the first time btw). It is missing part 6 though, so it's hardly complete! It's from Anchor Bay UK. I have no intention of getting it, I just want to know what form the docu on JC takes!
The docu I refer to IS part of the first "Halloween" disc but ONLY the version in the boxset - it is not on the stand alone release from last year.
"Ressurrection" (if you can call it that!) is not even out in UK cinemas yet!
The Anchor Bay US release I refer to is for the 25th Anniversary of "Halloween" which will be another US re-issue of the first film only with even more extras than before.

It should also be pointed out that the version of Halloween 3 - Season of the Witch that's present in the boxset is cut. This is strange considering that the previous release by MIA (an awful pan and scan atrocity) was completely uncut, so it's not down to censorship issues.
A lot of complaints have been raised regarding the quality of the discs of Halloween's 2 & 3.

The hour long directory on John Carpenter features interviews with the man himself, his crew, Debra Hill and stars from his movies - along with clips - and critic Mark Kermode from a quick look.
Also, Halloween 3 is not cut as, if you check the BBFC website, they represented it recently for this release and had all previous cuts waived. The stand-alone release, which is output by someone other than Anchor Bay, is still cut.
Hope that helps,
Edge

The stand-alone new release of Halloween III is also in the wrong format - it's 1.85:1 instead of my old region 1 version's 2.35:1. It does look a bit cramped in places, but then again it is anamorphic and in 5.1, incredibly! It is cut - the only cut I could see was when the woman is killed by the badge in the hotel - the sequence is cut short by a good 30 seconds.
To be fair though it's only around £8-£10 and I never thought I'd see the day when Halloween III came out as a special edition!
The new Halloween II disc also has a good commentary, and is the correct 2.35:1 ratio, but the print is very patchy.

However cheap it is, it's not worth having if it's a) the wrong format and b) cut. Good way to define a "SpEciAl eD." edition though! ;)
The new stand alone travesties of H2 and H3 are the same as the boxset versions.
Cheers for that info on th docu Edge!

Sorry, but no. The MIA release was uncut (I know, I have it). It was this release that had all previous cuts waived,
If you look up the version submitted by Sanctuary (I think?) is says specifically that it's a re-edited version.
I hate to be pedantic, but I'd hate people to think they were getting an uncut release, when it's not.

Apologies for being even more pedantic, but as you say, it says re-edited version. That is like saying a theatricul version is cut compared to a director's version. They're not cut - they're two different versions of the film.
Admittedly, I forgot to mention this in my previous post. However, if you check the BBFC website, you'll see the MIA version is cut compared to the original release which ran for 91:52 with 2:06 of pre cuts - a total of 93:58, so the MIA version is missing five whole seconds :)
Apologies for the lack of detail in the original post - I was doing two things at once - always a recipe for disaster.
Hope that clears up what I meant to say,
Edge

Okay, I think it needs to be borne in mind that the version previous to the MIA release was a VHS cassette, which might explain the 5 seconds difference.
However, the MIA DVD classified August 2000 runs for 93mins 53 secs.
The Anchor Bay/Sanctuary DVD classified August 2002 runs for 92 mins 47 secs.
I can see over a minute missing from the new release.
It apparently loses a lot from the first murder in the hospital and the woman who is zapped in her motel room.

oi kids stop yer fighting! ;)
Am I right in thinking then that the NEW Anchor Bay/Sanctuary dvd was submitted pre-cut to the BBFC hence the apparant "uncut by BBFC" status on THIS version?
Where does it say at the BBFC that the MIA version was passed uncut waiving all previous cuts? According to the BBFC no version has ever been cut by them, so all must have been submitted either uncut or pre-cut by the distributor.
So this is all really down to a cock-up by Anchor Bay/Sanctuary, sourcing a ****** print of Halloween 3 for their new ahem "widescreen" release! Sounds about par for the course of dvd releases at the moment! ...companies run by utter muppets who don't have a clue or a care about their product and consumer base.

Answers:

The MIA version was submitted uncut.
The Sanctuary/Anchor Bay version was submitted in a pre-cut version (and they have virtually admitted as much, Sanctuary handled it with AB fronting some money).
Neither submission had cuts imposed by the BBFC, therefore they both state "passed without cuts".
You can read all about the debacle here, at the Anchor Bay forum:

And apologies to Edge if I seem to have come across a bit strong. No offence intended.
