Question:
is the 3-disc collectors edition containing all 3 films actually any good? cuz i saw it in Woolworths earlier for 17.99 and it seemed quite good value
Im happy with it :)
Be nice if we could have a collectors set containing all 6 Hellraiser movies too!

Just what I was going to say, Hellraiser 1-4 are good, 5 is utter crap and Hellseeker is gonna be posted any minute!
I had this and sold it on - thought 1 & 2 were pretty good (I'd only ever seen 1 before) but the 3rd one is obviously a low budget straight to video affair. Also I believe 2 is heavily cut on R2, anchor bay R1 titles are one one's to go for (although more expensive).

That's true.
Some sites say that Hellraiser III from the box set is 97 mins long (which AFAIK is the Director's cut) whereas the single release of number III has a running time of 89 minutes.
Can anybody confirm that the box set has the longer version or not?
Thanks. :)
I have the separate R2 Hellraiser III which is the same as the boxset. It has 97 min on the box but it is 89min which is the same as my VHS version.

Hellraiser - doesn't have the commentary etc from the R1 (and it's a pretty good one)
Hellraiser 2 - this is cut and I believe it is missing a commentary...
Hellraiser 3- no idea
If you are a fan I would go for the R1 Anchor Bay special editions
The casual fans may want to plump for this tho as it is cheap
I ended up getting the R2 to complete the collection especially as it was only £5.99
Hellraiser 3 is also 4:3 (or so it says on the box) from the VCI boxet.
I'd like to get it, but would prefer to get the best version, any ideas?
As far as I know Hellraiser III is supposed to be 4:3.
Hellraiser III has a 'Red Edition' out in Germany which is in Anamorphic 1.85:1 and has a couple of featurettes.
http://www.musikvertrieb.at/cgi-bin/ast/displayitem.pl?4012050406882
Shipping prices can be costly on German sites though. Seen a few on ebay now and again.

Why does everyone say this, the Hellraiser films are not based around Pinhead, they are based around the existence of the Lament Configuration and the gateway to hell...ergo the name of the movies, hellraiser ie: raising hell
IMO Inferno is one of the best of the whole series after 1 and 2 of course, 3 is a poor excuse for a movie, badly acted and is only good because it is a Hellraiser movie, 4 is a nice spin on the whole origin of the box but is also badly acted and played out. 1 and 2 cannot really be faulted in any way.
How badly is the R2 versions of Hellraiser 1 and 2? And any reviews/comments on the rest of the series? I saw HR1 last night (R2) enjoyed it and am thinking of getting the R2 box set...

Hellraiser 2 - this and Hellraiser 6 are my favourite two sequels!
Hellraiser 3 was good lots of killing, not as good as the first two and most would probably say its rubbish.
Hellraiser 4 - Rubbish, didnt like it myself.
Hellraiser 5 & 6 - The better sequels IMO. Brings new life to the series ... Its like Memento meets Hellraiser! :)

I used to have the orginal R2 versions of Hellraiser 1 and 2 (came with my Samsung player). At the time I thought the quality was ok. But since, getting a more expensive player there were a lot of smearing in the background. They have since re-done them.
I ended up getting the R1 Hellraiser tin set and both versions are much better. The video was improved as well as DD 5.1 sound. The R2 only had or has DD 2.0 sound.
I have also then got up to no 5 on R1 ad will get R1 of no 6 when I can afford it.
If you have a multi region player then I suggest getting the R1 versions rather than the R2.

The original Hellraiser has Pinhead in it for 2 scenes. He is credited as 'lead cenobite' thats how integral he was to the idea of hellraiser.
Hellraiser is a twisted love story according to Barker on the commentary for hellraiser.
The box is a central part of the mythos, pinhead is great but Leviathan and LeMarchand are more important figures.
Also important for all hellraiser fans, as far as i know the anchor bay editions of the first 2 films are region 0.

Hellseeker (6) fits that perfectly, anyone who likes Jacobs Ladder should really check this out it creates the same warped atmosphere and is much better then your average Horror film!
It can be viewed as a direct continuation from the first too, so you dont need to have watched the other sequels!

Indeed there is (which is the 7th Hellraiser film) and is due out on DVD sometime in Q3 this year.
Also,Hellraiser:Hellworld (Part 8) which is due out in Q1 2004 (apparently the character of "Cop 2" is rather good in it!! ;) :D )
So. Hellraiser's 1 and 2 are good, No.3 is dire, and the others weave in and out of mediocrity all over the place.
And the series is now officially a Direct-To-Video series as opposed to being shown theatrically...
Someone mentioned that the last Hellraiser movie only had a budget of $3m! That's the same cost as a Babylon 5 tv movie! Gee, i can see that Miramax/Dimension really have faith in the franchise...

Probably because Bloodline was awful. Im telling you though the 5th and 6th are good despite being Direct-to-Video! Hellraiser 5 & 6 are hardly gonna bring in crowds with a Cinema release ;)
I like no 3 and it is one of my fav's. Its got some classic lines from Pinhead which I like.
It was at the cinema near me but only for a week. I believe it was the last hellraiser to be shown at the cinema.

You don't say... ;)
I have my Red Edition Hellraiser III next to me and confirm that it isn't widescreen, it says VollBild on the box which translates as "frame" [which isn't much help,I know], but the image on my TV is 4:3. The picture quality isn't much cop either. I don't think there is a definitive version of H:3 about
H:4, I thought was a neat extension of the Hellraiser story. H:5 was just crap. I haven't seen 6, 7 and am looking forward to 8 as one of the Policemen is played by....

That's filming back to back with Hellraiser: Deadworld, IIRC. About a group of teenagers who discover a hellish game which summons pinhead, I believe. It sounds like utter tripe. :P
I'm actually kinda' tempted to see Inferno as I've heard it's similar to Angel Heart which I quite enjoyed. And then there's just the morbid curiosity which will eventually drive me to watch Hellseeker as well...

It is similar, thats one of my Top 10 films and I recommend Inferno and Hellseeker - although Hellseeker is very similar to Inferno, just with more of Pinhead.
I heard rumours that 4 was drastically recut by the studio, and the whole space section was added by a dfferent director - Due to this there is an original director's cut in the offing. Can anyone confirm this?

Number four did have Alan Smithee as the director.
I believe there was this whole medevil section cut from the 4th Hellraiser movie, stills of which are apparently in circulation (and may have also been glimpsed in the trailer)
I don't think adding a medieval section could have saved the film anyway. The whole thing was a mess with at least two different directors (I forget the first one, but special effects maestro Kevin Yagher took over at some point before abandoning the project in disgust).
joe chappelle (halloween: the curse of michael myers) also directed some stuff on bloodline.
miramax screwed that film over, by demanding rewrite after rewrite, and reshoot after reshoot.
they were concerned the pinhead came in 2/3's into the film etc etc.
the latest two movies are finally coming to DVD!
Hellraiser: Deader - June 7th
Hellraiser: Hellworld - Sept 6th
I hope they're as good as the last one! :)
After watching Inferno I'm inclined to look forward to the next two (well, the one about the video game sounds pap but the other has a chance). I thought Inferno was easily the best sequel in the series and felt the most like the original in that it wasn't a Pinhead-starring slasher.
I liked Inferno too but Hellseeker (6) was very similar and better again.
im confused, what films are there?
Hellraiser
Hellraiser: Hellbound
Hellraiser: Hell on Earth
Hellraiser: Bloodline
Hellraiser: Inferno
Hellraiser: Hellseeker ??
Hellraiser: Deader
Hellraiser: Hellworld?
is that all of them? have i got them in correct order? I kinda lost track after Inferno.
Aye, that's right :)
Now, about that Nightbreed sequel...
Hellseeker starred Kirsty from the original (only for about 5 minutes but it was a good plot) also I think Clive Barker actually approved of this sequel which is a shame as the dvd release was so poor, it took over a year just to reach R2.
as for Nightbreed, I'd settle for a decent DVD of the original!
Aye. Even the bare bones is out of print now! :(
I just watched Hellraiser: Deader and it's terrible!
A huge step back from the last two movies. :(
Haha, yeah it's pretty bad innit? Cheap as chips looking, too.
Looking forward to part 8 and Mr Speed's awesome cameo (at last!!!)
Haha, yeah it's pretty bad innit? Cheap as chips looking, too.
yeah it does look cheap, that's another thing I liked about Inferno & Hellseeker they both managed to hide the obvious small budget whereas Deader clearly looks like a TV movie.
I'm not really expecting much from Hellworld but I can't see it being any worse.
I dunno, "vdeogames" + "hellraiser" + "clueless idiots at Dimension" = "big stinking pile of crap" in my books. I'd love to be pleasantly surprised but seeing as these last two seemed to be made at the same time with many of the same people involved I can't see a miraculous turnaround in quality.

Actually the Second fim is called -
Hellbound: Hellraiser II
another annoyance is Hellraiser: Deader is a good DVD, shame Dimension didn't put as much effort into Hellseeker or Inferno.
Feature audio commentaries with director Rick Bota, make-up effects creator Gary J. Tunnicliffe and actor Doug Bradley
Deleted and extended scenes with optional director commentary
The Making of Deader - behind-the-scenes featurette
Behind the Visual FX of Hellraiser: Deader
Storyboard-to-Film Comparisons
Location Scouting
Practical Effects Featurette with Gary J. Tunnicliffe
Behind-the-scenes Photogallery
Gag reel
They should do, after the dvd has been in development hell for years
I just watched Hellraiser: Deader and it's terrible!
A huge step back from the last two movies. :(
Yep agree 100% with that. Although I was hoping for something at least at Hellseeker quality, I was so dissapointed with Deader.
The script was not originally a Hellraiser movie and it shows. They have graphed the Cenobites onto the story and they just don't seem to gel. Also having a character (Joey) as a 'comic relief' was, in my view, a poor move.
I am fearing the worst for Hellworld :(
Lance Henrikson is the only reason I'm going to take a chance with Hellworld.
Lance Henrikson is the only reason I'm going to take a chance with Hellworld.
For an actor who is so well regarded and liked as Henrikson, he doesn't half appear in a lot of crappy, crappy films. He seems to have literally no quality control and I reckon if I could afford a return ticket from the US I could probably get him to appear in a home video of me falling down the stairs.
Lance Henrikson is the only reason I'm going to take a chance with Hellworld.
What about Mr Speed? Don't forget his film debut! *
and he doesn't get killed by the Cenobites

That was a pretty good one..
I think that was Inferno :)
It is Inferno. Not a bad film actually, had it's moments throughout (not a patch on the original though obviously)
I'm confused.. where does Chuck Norris's "Hellbound" fit into all of this, Is he Pinhead? ;)
 I'd forgotten that film existed. Thanks for reminding me Beowulf. I;ll now have to spend the next 10 yrs forgetting it again.
just watched Hellraiser 8: Hellworld and it was quite good, much better then Hellraiser 7: Deader but still not as good as Hellraiser 6:Hellseeker.
it was your standard Hellraiser slasher (like part 3) but the ending provided a great original twist.
3/5
Are the US DVD releases for 7 and 8 decent, or are there better Euro-releases?
I ended up with a P&S (or is it open-matte?) Dutch DVD of part 6, but it was still pretty watchable. I prefered Inferno though, some awesome imagery in that film.
Inferno was good but I imo Hellseeker was just an updated version of that idea and it earned Barkers approval, it's just a shame the series went back to the forgettable slasher style.
I know the R1 DVD release of Deader was packed with extras, despite being a truly awful movie! I haven't looked at the special features on Hellworld yet.

Answers:

Answers:
I don't think adding a medieval section could have saved the film anyway. The whole thing was a mess with at least two different directors (I forget the first one, but special effects maestro Kevin Yagher took over at some point before abandoning the project in disgust).
Answers:
joe chappelle (halloween: the curse of michael myers) also directed some stuff on bloodline.
miramax screwed that film over, by demanding rewrite after rewrite, and reshoot after reshoot.
they were concerned the pinhead came in 2/3's into the film etc etc.

After watching Inferno I'm inclined to look forward to the next two (well, the one about the video game sounds pap but the other has a chance). I thought Inferno was easily the best sequel in the series and felt the most like the original in that it wasn't a Pinhead-starring slasher.

I liked Inferno too but Hellseeker (6) was very similar and better again.

is that all of them? have i got them in correct order? I kinda lost track after Inferno.

Aye, that's right :)
Now, about that Nightbreed sequel...
Answers:
Hellseeker starred Kirsty from the original (only for about 5 minutes but it was a good plot) also I think Clive Barker actually approved of this sequel which is a shame as the dvd release was so poor, it took over a year just to reach R2.
as for Nightbreed, I'd settle for a decent DVD of the original!

yeah it does look cheap, that's another thing I liked about Inferno & Hellseeker they both managed to hide the obvious small budget whereas Deader clearly looks like a TV movie.

For an actor who is so well regarded and liked as Henrikson, he doesn't half appear in a lot of crappy, crappy films. He seems to have literally no quality control and I reckon if I could afford a return ticket from the US I could probably get him to appear in a home video of me falling down the stairs.

and he doesn't get killed by the Cenobites

it was your standard Hellraiser slasher (like part 3) but the ending provided a great original twist.

Are the US DVD releases for 7 and 8 decent, or are there better Euro-releases?
I ended up with a P&S (or is it open-matte?) Dutch DVD of part 6, but it was still pretty watchable. I prefered Inferno though, some awesome imagery in that film.
Answers:
Inferno was good but I imo Hellseeker was just an updated version of that idea and it earned Barkers approval, it's just a shame the series went back to the forgettable slasher style.
I know the R1 DVD release of Deader was packed with extras, despite being a truly awful movie! I haven't looked at the special features on Hellworld yet.
