Question:
I am thinking about getting the Charlie Chaplin Collection DVDs released by Stonevision Entertainment, but I haven't been able to find any information on them, apart from which films they contain.
So, I was wondering if anyone here could help me. What I'd like to know is: Is the picture quality acceptable? And - most important - have the dvd producers decided to "enhance" the films with the ..... (not being a native english speaker, I can't think of a nasty enough word) sound effects that some people seem to think must be added to silent comedies?
...I'm just giving it a last chance before I give up and get the films on R1 instead...
Don't know anything about the quality of the releases you've mentioned but Warners has announced the release of The Charlie Chaplin Collection which will see the release of 18 of his films. Warner's say the films will be digitally remastered and are due for release June of Next year.

Forget Stonevision. On the one I have (includes The Rink) the quality is very poor - even the menus don't work properly and the advertised extras don't seem to be on the disc.

Apart from that, I just found out that there's a french 6disc boxset with all of Chaplin's Essanay and Mutual films out soon. It will be released by Arté video, who have a reputation for making good dvds of silent films (in any case, their Buster Keaton box is supposed to be good). It even looks like it will be quite cheap! (cheapest price on dvdpascher.net so far is 53 €).
Considering that, the Stonevision discs no longer even have the price to their advantage...
