Brotherhood of the Wolf UK R2 cut?
Question:

I was wondering if anyone knows if the UK R2 of Brotherhood of the Wolf is cut? I bought it yesterday (the HMV 2-disc, if that makes a difference), and watched it today. Afterwards, though, I was flicking through the chapter selection screens, and noticed scenes playing that I hadn't seen in the film. I selected those chapters and fast-forwarded through them, still not seeing the scenes. Can anyone tell me what's going on?

Answers:

according to the bbfc site its not (i was wondering the same meself as i want to buy it)

I would guess that the menus come straight from the French extended cut whereas the film itself is the standard, slightly shorter version - thus the menus could include scenes that you won't find in the film itself.
If you give details of the scenes that are "missing" (and rougholy where they fall in the film) then someone should be able to let you know if they are the differences between the two versions.

notice though that there are multiple versions of both film and video release of varying lengths , none of which have been cut in any way so what Pathe and Universal were upto (or distributors in general who submit varying lengths of film to the bbfc with no cuts and no change in certificate) I've no idea unless they were trying to attain a lower certificate but not by cutting enough from the film for the BBFC.
Anyway theres a 5 minute difference between the longest film version submitted and longest video version so maybe the scenes are in there somewhere

There are two theatrical and two home video releases classified - with a 3 and half minute difference between them.
Having had time to go over the UKR2 disc - yes, there are a number of scenes missing, so it appears to be the shorter version.

still can't believe that the french is in 2.0, but the dubbed english in 5.1.. who's bright idea was that?
now you talk about cuts..:nono: :nono: have now ordered that 3 disc edition instead.
£21.99 at cdwow now if you're interested.

One of the missing scenes involves the creation of a fake wolf to show to the public (as I remember, it's to try and prove that they've dealt with the beast). The other is a dream sequence involving Monica Bellucci.
These scenes are present in the French release that I have ("Version Longue Inedite"), but quite why the director's cut was released in France and not in the UK I'm not sure - it's only a few minutes longer.

I was thinking of buying this the other day. I stopped when I saw the audio specs...
English dubbed 5.1
French subtitled 2.0
is this right?
Does the R1 have the French track in 5.1? I assume it would have a 5.1 mix in it's original language.

yes, see my post above... I was standing in the queue the other and only noticed this with seconds to spare.
the R1 (& 3?) have the french in 5.1... £13.99 at play the last time I checked.
the 3 disc SE also has a DTS track supposedly... currently on its way to me.
hmmm.. ways to convince people to go multi-region - this is a top one... having the dubbed soundtrack in better quality than the original language.
absolutely ludicrous.

I noticced from DVD Times there is 2 canadian versions.
Is the one disc version from play (at £13.99 R1), the canadian DTS version or the US version?
I would like the DTS but don't want the 3 disc version.

Sorry MartinC - I must have skipped over that :)
I think I may well go for the three disc too but it is a bit expensive for a film I haven't seen before... hmmmm! What is a girl to do?

the play one just looks like the plain r1 dd 5.1 version, you'd have to go to dvdsoon or one of the canadian outfits to get that unless somewhere like ********* is doing it cheapily.
I ordered the 3 disc canadian from cdwow on sunday night - arrived today so pretty quick.
noticeably its the canadian se, but not the french cover one... actually the english one which is a plus for me at least.
3 days delivery is pretty good, especially at only £1-2 more than dvdsoon, and also £4-5 less than ********* and the others.

After reading that somw are wondering what was "cut" from the theatrical release of LpDL ( BotW ) I'm copying and pasting what was in an article at dvdrama.net a year ago. It'a translated by babelfish from French to English:
"Le Pacte Des Loups
reinstated scenes
The reinstated scenes all are gathered in the medium of film and exclusively relate to the intrigue in love which is tied between Fronsac (Samuel Bihan) and Marianne de Morangias (Emilie Dequenne). These sequences bring from now on a better coherence to the histoire and includes/understands in particular much better why Fronsac decides to return in the country of Gévaudan.
The beginning of the hostilities is in 65 ' 28 of the DVD (damage that there is not a chapter foreseen for the occasion) with the first scene which shows sold(produced) Fronsac admitting to Sylvia (Monica Bellucci) that the animal did not die and that it is in collusion with the imposture orchestrated by Beauterne.
A sequence in subjective camera comes immediately after where Jean-François de Morangias (Vincent Cassel) is going to steal incognito (we recognize his(her, its) voice(vote) when he addresses a prostitute) the sketches of Fronsac in Sylvia's room(chamber).
Follows in the stride the third scene showing the break between Fronsac and Marianne under Jean - François's eyes, this last one having put back(handed) drawings stolen from his(her) sister. In this sequence (2 ' 32), we already guessed the attraction of the brother for the sister in its will to remove a pretender (the way she(he) falls to persuade his(her) sister whom Fronsac deceives its force, reveal perfectly his(her, its) manipulator side). These three scenes owed on the whole 4 ' 04.
The film resumes then its familiar class(course) until 74 ' 47 (just after the death of the second shepherdess) where we find Marianne praying in the church. She(it) is joined by Sylvia who teaches him(her) that Fronsac likes(loves) only she(it) and that he is soon going to leave in remote parts of the country. The end of the sequence and Monica Bellucci's phantasmagorical departure turns out of the most beautiful aesthetic effect.
Immediately after, we find Fronsac on the point to sail towards Africa. The young marquess, Thomas d' Apcher (Jérémie Rénier) lands to try to convince the knight to return in Gévaudan, animal continuing to go on the rampage. Fronsac explains to him(her) that king forbade him(her) to turn(return) to it. The marquess passes on to him(her) then a letter written by Marianne. In its reading, Fronsac is enthused and warns the marquess and Mani that they leave(restart) in the hunting.
After these two new scenes (of a total duration of 3 ' 20), the film finds definitively its measurement cinema."
So these are the scenes that should be missing. I thought the Bellucci scene was in the theatrical version. Apparently not.
