Question:
Very good indeed....not an immense thriller as the trailer leads you to belive....but great performances!
Anyone else seen it..?
What did u think..?
When is it out?

We don't have a release date...but had a press show Thursday. I had the unfortunate job of having to preview the print Wednesday...:D
Its a fox serachlight release....so I anticipate it will have a limited release.
Also...perhaps due to the currect climate...and the undertones of the film....I might be delayed...but thats just me speculating..
It's a great film! Robin Williams' best serious performance to date, IMO. Lets hope that this means that Static will get a release on DVD now. This film keeps on course all the way through. At times, I got worried that the last section of the film would dissolve into the standard hollywood "action-packed" ending, but things are kept on a more realistic angle all the way through. Clever scripting and good performances mean this will be one I'll watch again.

OI!! I was at that Wednesday night "pre-preview" too!!
Excellent film - William's performance is easily better than Insomnia - just the kind of role he's made for.
A very subversive film, especially with the Paedophilia undertones, I don't expect it to do well either, but do catch it where you can.
Defo DVD purchase.
Yes it is very good.
Williams is excellent in it. Intriguing little movie may not do really big business but it is worth catching.
Don't you get the feeling that this movie is one huge rip-off of Manhunter? I haven't seen it, but I remember reading Red Dragon years ago and thinking what a brilliant idea it was to have the killer'profiling' his own victims through his work as a photo technician. On the other hand, I suppose Hollywood's output would shrivel to almost nothing if every new film was based on a new idea, but One Hour does seem a bit much, especially as we are expected to shell out to see the sodding remake any time soon...

For it to be a <U>huge</U> rip-off, it would have to steal rather more plot elements than the relatively minor one you're citing. Is <I>The Silence of the Lambs</I> "one huge rip-off of <I>Psycho</I>"?
I thought the killer's occupation and resulting access to his victims' private lives was pretty significant in Red Dragon. It seems (haven't seen it, as I said previously) that One Hour Photo has nicked the idea wholesale and given us effectively the second remake in the same year. To be honest, I'm really struggling to see the connection between Silence and Psycho!

The entire plot appears to be taken from Red Dragon, with Williams as Dollarhyde. To what degree this bears out is uncertain. But it certainly 'feels' like a huge rip off from this distance, and far from minor.
Feel free to tell us why you think Psycho compares similarly to Silence (in spoiler tags if need be). Sure, the main character in Psycho is based mostly on Ed Gein, and a supporting character in Silence is a composite based on a handful of actual serial killers, which include Gein. But other than that?

It's Dolarhyde.
But you've missed the point, Sy doesn't want to kill the two main people he's focussing on; Nina and Jakob, he's only driven to attacking Will after...
uncovering the affair with Maya, admittedly that happens after he's sacked from SavMart, but up until then the obsession is about joining the family. not killing them.
The segment:
where he's imagining unwrapping the jumper in the christmas scene confirms this.
The real goal of Sy comes in the last shot, and is what makes the film even more disturbing:
in the final photo. he has his hands of the shoulder of Jakob, confirming his true goal of being a "father" figure once Will was out the way
As opposed to Dolarhyde who fits the description of a serial murderer, killing for pleasure and need...
I have yet to see Red Dragon to confirm any similarities, but come on, One Hour Photo is certainly one of this year's more original films; what would you rather have a constant diet of Scooby Doo's, or more fare like OHP and Road to Perdition???
*Cough* edonkey screener *cough*
Good film, solid performances from the whole cast, Williams in particular is excellent as the over-familiar, unnerving photo-processing clerk.

Only initially are those undertones apparent though, as the story unfolds it becomes clear the Sy's fixation is with the 'perfect' family unit as a whole, rather than an obsession with one particular member. As evidenced by this quote from Williams:
And who wouldn't be? She's so beautiful. And then when he starts to approach the kid, you think, “Oh my God, he's a pedophile!” And, then, when he approaches the father, you realize, “Wait a minute. Something else is going on.” He really thinks of himself as part of their family.

I disagree, he doesn't want to be Jake's father or a husband for Connie. As that, in his eyes, would be destroying the family.
That final shot may even be daydream sequence . As would they really want Sy to be a part of their lives after witnessing his strange behaviour? In which case, it's a very sad ending for Sy, not only has he contributed to the Yorkin's splitting-up (Connie is indifferent when Will returns home and doesn't greet him), he has also failed to become 'Uncle Sy'.
One Hour Photo was completed before Red Dragon and was shown in the states months ago at film festivals.
You could compare movies all day.

Well it's showing at the Warner Village, Reading, for at least the next week, which is hardly renowned for exciting programming, so it looks like it's release won't be too limited.

I had Sy down as trying to bump the dad off so he could take the position, but you could look at it as him trying to become part of the family because he targetted them as the perfect "nuclear" family. I can't remember whether it's made clear why Sy picked the Yorkin's as opposed to other families he processed photos for.

I suspect the reference was to <I>Red Dragon</I> the novel, published in the early 1980s and previously filmed as <I>Manhunter</I> in 1986.
A good and clever film. However it was supposed to be a thriller, and there wasn't one moment in the film when I was scared.
In One Hour Photo Robin Williams (Good Will Hunting) plays the lonely Sy Parrish, a photograph developer for the SavMart supermarket. He has regular customers that he tries to connect with since his own life is so pathetic and mundane. He has no family of his own, but he feels like part of one particular family, the Yorkins.
Sy has been arrested and recalls his criminal acts to the police so the film is told in flashback. Since he's been developing the photographs for the Yorkins for many years he feels like Uncle Sy to the young Jake and tries to connect with him. He's soon fired from his job as his boss is suspicious of missing photograph prints and slowly he looses his grip on reality.
In one way the film is very similar to Michael Mann's Manhunter and also feels like a Stanley Kubrick film with the meticulous spartan set designs. This makes the viewer very uncomfortable as it injects the loneliness of Sy Parish into the viewer's mind and makes them feel sympathetic for Sy at the same time. As Sy gradually tries become part of the Yorkin family in his own mind there's a real sense of fear that something dreadful is going to happen. This makes the film more tense as it goes along.
I thought that Robin Williams was excellent as Sy, projecting a true lunatic which is very different from his usual feel good roles like in Patch Adams. This role is also different to the murderer in played in the more recent Insomnia which shows how much a diverse actor he is. Performances from the support cast such as Connie Nielsen and Michael Vartan are also very good.
The plot itself is very good, with a realistic tone that makes this film all the more frightening that something like this could actually happen. While I thought the film was very good I'm not sure I'd watch it again as it's not really my type of film. I mainly went to see it as I think Robin Williams is a great actor. Overall the film is very good so it's worth a look as it's very creepy.
While I agree that Williams' acting was excellent. He was very believable as a loner and social misfit, I found the whole film lacking and unfulfilling. :(
Apart from the slight stalking theme, there is no real 'thriller' element. The ending was disappointing too.
It seems to be a 'docu-view' into the life of a saddo.
I'm not sure the references to Red Dragon/Manhunter are that applicable.
I'm still not sure why this had a 15 rating.
just my £0.02 worth....
I agree with bigsimes - a strangely lacking film. Almost reminded me of The Cell for some reason - perhaps just the "nightmare" sequence though, which I thought there should've been more of.
But my only question really is - and I'll word it to avoid possible spoilers:
WHO TOOK THE PHOTOS OF THE HUSBAND?!
Maybe its not important - but I was expecting it to be the crux of some great twist that never came...
I enjoyed it..certainly kept me entertained for 90 minutes..Robin Williams was very good, an air of menace and at the same time, tenderness.
Interesting movie, great performance from Williams. I wonder if the ending may have been compromised a little by the studio though. Come inside my spoiler space....
Sy makes sure that his ex-boss will find the pictures of his child thus alerting the police. Why would he do this? The only reason i can think of is that he wants to be caught after he's humilated Will. Indeed we see him lying on the bed in his hotel room and it looks like he's waiting for the police. However when he sees the police car he runs off, thus leading to a chase sequence. Although this is exciting it's also redundant as we know from the beginning of the film that Sy has been captured alive. This makes me wonder if Fox tried to inject a little action into the proceedings. What do you reckon?
Another good example of perhaps what I've been trying to put my finger on, i.e. they put stuff in that is designed to 'make you think' - except when you do they turn into plot holes instead of "ooh, clever".

What he said.
I think strangely lacking is an understatement!
The film was really quite poor with so many gaping plot holes and left over questions I can't begin to ask them! Plus for a Hollywood film there was virtually no closure to any of the issues.
Decidedly odd, Williams didn't look comfortable at all - I should have gone to see Red Dragon!
Someone enlighten me - was the music supposed to sound dodgy? I wasn't sure whether it was intentional.... not impressed by the film, or Williams, at all.... very disappointing :(
Anyone else seen it..?
