Question:
As these DVDs have been out for a while I'm sure that someone must have done a direct comparison of them.
I understand that the R2 is in fact identical to the R1/R4 with respect to the version of The Gathering - with JMS cuts and new score? Is this correct? Its just that originally there was a rumour flying around that the R2 was different to the R1/R4.
Also what is the picture/sound quality like between the different regions versions of these DVDs?
Ron Hill mentioned that he found that the R1 was superior to the R2. He posted:
"R2 is noticeably grainier. I'm guessing that the R2 was produced from a transcoding of the R1 master. The extra resolution that PAL offers just shows the grain more noticeably than the R1. It's particularly noticeable on interior shots and closeups. The difference isn't so noticeable on the CGI actually."
I just wanted to confirm this (Ron - are you out there?), and get other peoples' opinions on this as well.
Thanks

I currently own the R1 version the reasons for this are as follows:
1).. You get both The Gathering and the Beginning
2).. It only cost me £10 at the time Comapred to about £15 for each on R2.
The only quibble I have is the lack of extras.
Thanks for the info jpor
The best price I've found for the R1 is £9.70 delivered from DVDBoxOffice - The Gathering/In the Beginning (http://www.dvdboxoffice.com/description.asp?pid=90010873)
The best price I've found for the R2 is £9.99 each from dvd.co.uk - In the Beginning (http://www.dvd.co.uk/product.asp?id=D015932&fs=dpc) & The Gathering (http://www.dvd.co.uk/product.asp?id=D016396&fs=dpc)
So the R1 is half the price of the R2 - but I would happily pay the extra £10 if it looked/sounded better.
However, I think that the extras are nonexistant on both R1 and R2 variants.
I bought R4, because it was nearly the same price as R1 at the time, also NTSC but in a proper case:D

Is the R1 in a snapper or something?
Its in a snapper mate, I went for R4 purely for that reason.

Looks like it will be R4 for me as well then.
What is the quality like?
It is identical to the R1 apart from the case I assume.
The R4 version is just under £11 delivered from FamilyBoxOffice (http://www.familyboxoffice.com.au/movie.asp?ID=5358)
