Question:
Have seen some great Australian made films recently, The Castle, Chopper...was wondering if anyone could recommend any others ?
thanks in advance for any recommendations
Newsfront, Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Dish, Muriel’s Wedding, The Interview, The Last Wave. Not sure if Walkabout qualifies but it’s a goodie.
Lantana
Availible on DVD :
Mad Max trilogy (well, I'll recommend the first two)
'Breaker' Morant (only £4.33 on play.com; widescreen)
Dead Calm
Gallipoli
Not availbile on DVD :
Proof (early role for Russell Crowe)
Roadgames
Malpractice
Bliss
Celia
Ghosts...of the Civil Dead
[Some of this might be New Zealand made, but I can't be bothered to check]
...erm... the original "Mad Max" ... "Dead Calm" ... "Young Einstein"...
. . . :smokin: . . .
Check out the review on this site of 'The Bank' by Gary Couzens.
...and "Babe" ... "Babe: Pig In The City" ... "Bad Boy Bubby"... and... (check the IMDb for Australian, respectively Australian-co-produced movies - I think you'll be in for a big surprise!... - "Moulin Rouge!" anyone?...)
. . . :smokin: . . .
There's one called "Praise" that i saw while i was over there a few years back. its sure to be available via ezydvd and is dead funny!
Go here (http://www.dvdtimes.org.uk/index.cgi?page=ReviewsIndex) and look at all of Gary Couzens's reviews, he seems to review a lot of Australian films
'The Light Horsemen'
Avoid the current R4 release like the plague though. It might have DTS but it's in the wrong ratio (1.78:1 instead of 2.35:1) & has one of the worst transfers I've ever seen.
Strictly Ballroom
Fortress (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0091069) Crackin little film.
Two Hands and Risk are two of Bryan Brown's best movies, especially Risk.
second to Two Hands. dodgy 4:3p+s extra-free UK dvd is to be avoided though
Available:
'Breaker Morant';a fantastic, powerful masterpiece..Do not buy the R2,shocking widescreen transfer.Get the R1 Fox Lorber release.
Not available:
The Big Steal ;in my top ten of all time.
The Club;Great fun.
Rikky & Pete;charming.
I think Malcolm's good.
Can't believe no-one has mentioned The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert yet. :D
The Dish
Is Lantana any good? I was going to see it at the cinema, but opted for Insomnia instead, but I've seen the DVD being touted on the classifieds a bit?
The trailer for lantana is misleading and may have resulted in a number of people being disappointed as they expected a thriller when its about the collapse of relationships and the links between the main characters, but still a good film.
La Spagnola was good but might put you off zucchinis (hey they're mostly italians).
I'll second the mention of Priscilla, I'm surprised that the australians haven't released a decent dvd of this film.
If it hasn't come out in the UK yet go see Rt Proof Fence when it arrives - brilliant.
The Year My Voice Broke - don't think it's available on DVD, though.
Don't forget Romper Stomper! Brilliant!

It is, as one of my friends has jus lent it to me, not sure where he bought it from though.
EDIT- there seem to be a few places (http://www.*********************/zdvdresults.php?session=8934bc8158800e205e5771599e4c200f) stocking it.
The cars that ate paris
Gallipoli
Just following up on Peter Weir who then went stateside.
Mr Reliable - loveable comedy that the australians have become known for these days
The Quiet Earth - although I don't think this has had a DVD release yet.
:(
As mentioned by jonathan.e, Check out "The Interview" starring Hugo Weaving (Matrix, LOTR) I bought it on the strength of Gary Couzens review and wasnt disappointed.

Terence Stamp was brilliant in this film! Hugo Weaving is wonderful and Guy Pearce is just...well...gorgeous - in drag or not :D
Priscilla is everything To Wong Foo aspired (yet failed) to be...
A bitchy, campy road trip that takes shots at ABBA - what more could you ask for? And did I mention Guy Pearce? Sorry :o

Is there another DVD release of this film, current or planned?

thanks very much to everyone who has replied, much appreciated.
Please keep them coming, and thanks again
Another vote for The Dish. Really easy-going comedy, Sam Neill in a cardigan and with pipe, but I found it a very engrossing movie. Excellent night in

From New Zealand not Oz unless I’m very much mistaken. Top movie though - reminds me a lot of Miracle Mile for some reason.
Lantana, as already suggested. But don't be misled by reviews rambling on about it being a thriller and full of twists, etc. It's much more sombre than that. Gripping but bleak.
a couple more....
Matrix, MI:2 :D
ahh the castle, i saw that in Oz a few years ago. Great film but i still dont have it on DVD. What is the best version available?
Another vote for Rt Proof Fence
From NZ, but I'm willing to stretch a point because it's such a pip: Forgotten Silver.
Anybody remember an oz film about a bloke who robs a bank using radio controlled toys? What was the name of this film as I would love to watch it again for a laugh.
