Lord of the rings Collectors Edition - Disk swap?
Question:

As far as I can make it out the film will be spread over the first 2 disks???????
Is this the case and does that mean getting up in the middle of the film to do the ******* swap (Or will it be soundtracks on the first disk and commentaries on the second)???
Its getting to the stage that I wont bother and just go out and get the 2 disk version!
Anyone know?
Keith

Yes you'll have to get up and swap the discs over at some point in the movie, the reason for this is it's just too damn long to fit on one disc with all the extras - commentaries, the DD 5.1 & DTS soundtracks

Will be worth it though, for the picture quality and sound quality... (if they use all the available space)
And besides who really wants to sit for over 3 and a half hours straight without getting up?!

I'm always pausing films to go to the fridge and get more beer! So getting up to swap the discs is just another beer break for me. :)

I agree, and with it being so cheap from dvdsoon i thought i may as well go for it. Especially as i got the 2 disc from devoted for just over a tenner. £28 for both seems pretty good. If i decide i want to keep one version i can easily ebay the other.

exactly. No big deal at all.
Did it for Pearl Harbour and will be happy to do it again for the extended LOTR.

Whats annoying is that AFAIK the "DVD Video Specification version 1.12" specifies 133 minutes per layer. Using that premis a DVD 9 should hold 266 minutes thus allowing for the film to go onto 1 disc easily as long as they keep the audio requirments down i.e disc 1 for film and main soundtracks and disc 2 for film and extra soundtracks.
Thus eliminating the disc swap.
Probably just down to **** poor lazy transfer planning again :(

I don't think I have the bladder capacity to watch the film without at least one break.:D

But they are a load of commentries as well as DTS and DD tracks, in addition of foreign language tracks.
Aside from printing the film twice, once on each disc, they really couldn't have done as you suggest...the more commentries and audio choices the better in my book...

If you must have the movie on 1 dvd then just by the version thats out already, job done

Yes but what I would rather have is the extended movie on one disk. Cant seem to get that job done :(
Its a choice thing I suppose. Do I get the 2 disk and miss out on the longer film/extras or do I put up with the break and have the extra bits.
Its a bit of a 6 and two 3's thing in my mind at the moment (Am I the only one that remembers flippers and how we used to get wound up with them?)

Answers:

So you would rather there were 4 versions of the film, rather than 3?
Hmmmmmmm

Flippers were a pain, especially on 1 and a half hour films. 3 and a half hours is a bit different though. But you do make a valid point...
Perhaps it's time to buy one of those DVD players that hold more than one disc...

There are only actually 2 versions.
The difference between the directors cut version and the collectors version is an extra disk that is currently sold seperatly anyways.
My point is that if you can get 266 mins of video on a side maybe they could have arranged the stuff so that it fitted on one disk for the main soundtracks and one disk for the extra soundtrack's/commentaries.
I dont care about versions! only lack of hassle

I'm probably being really thick, but how would it work having the film on one disk and the commentary on another one?

What I mean is the film+main soundtracks on disk 1 and the film+commentaries on disk 2
Or maybe film+DD sound+1/2 commentaries on disk 1 and film+DTS+1/2 commentaries on disk 2
or someting like that.
I know that space is limited but I'm sure with a bit of jiggery pokery they could have sorted something out.
I will prob get the four disk version (I'm not to fussed re the 5th disk) but the disk change does make me feel like I'm being short changed somehow.
Maybe I just like to winge
