Question:
Fans of 'war genre' movies may appreciate this film tonight,
although maybe not the format on this channel.
A Midnight Clear (http://uk.imdb.com/Title?0102443)
It never really feels like a war film though. It's more reminiscent of Biloxi Blues than any actual war movie I can think of.
Keith Gordon's weakest movie and still very good. Sadly though, the main 'event' of the film is so riotously daft you don't need the thousand-yard-stare to see the disaster in the making.
And it features my favourite Mark Isham score - a cue near the end is stunning.
I had heard things about it before but aint seen it yet, still there's
a good few stars in it.
Must be worth taping though eh ?
I'll be watching it and if I like it enough I'll be buying the DVD. The full-screen version of the film is apparently open-matte so there shouldn't be any cropping.
It's definitely worth a watch! I probably sounded like I was putting it down more than I meant to - it's way above average, but just has more problems than the other (all five-star-fabulous) Gordon films.
Thanks for the info on the DVD, Earl. I've held off from buying it until I found out one way or another. Will probably get it for the Hawke - Gordon commentary.
Anyway... as I wont be staying up to watch it, I'm off to put the video on now.
Just looked for the DVD on Play and came across this line in their review of it:
"A Midnight Clear ranks with Black Hawk Down for its stunning emotional impact."
Firstly - how can the two films be compared? They are nothing alike. Secondly - where was the emotion in BHD - it was nothing but bland action surrounding characters you didn't even know the name of. A Midnight Clear is more like The Thin Red Line than BHD.
Still, good to see it on TV, even if in P&S. I might pick up the DVD simply for the commentary.
is that film the "MOTHER....NOOOOOO" one? I vaguely remember seeing it when I was in Norway with norwegian subs. It was quite good from what I remember...
I liked this film lots. I showed it at a film fest I ran many years ago, and the general feedback was pretty good. It works best if you go in knowing very little about what's going to happen, I think.
