Question:

Full information at Monkey peaches (http://www.monkeypeaches.com/Hero.html)
I was walking around Hong Kong today and I saw banners for this movie with a Dec 2002 release date ... I'm really excited as Zhang Yimou never disappoints!
Easily my most anticipated movie of the year!

This film is going to kick arse! :rocker:
Donnie Yen, Jet Li, Zhang Ziyi, Maggie Cheung :notworthy
Although dont  Miramax  have the rights to it? PLEASE tell me they only have the rights to it in the US. God knows what those butchers will do once they get their scissors out. Add a Nickleback soundtrack, dubbed voices and make it 'easy' for their audiences to understand.
Surely it will get a proper release in Hong Kong?

Further Zhang Yimou news:
Columbia Tri-Star has announced the DVD release for Happy Times, the latest film from acclaimed Chinese director Zhang Yimou ('Raise the Red Lantern' and ' The Road Home').
Set for release on December 3rd Happy Times will be presented in anamorphic widescreen with both Mandarin and English Dolby Digital 5.1 audio and of course English subtitles.
Zhang Yimou films are always a real treat so be sure to check out Happy Times!

This film is more important to me than SW:EP3 and both LOTR sequels combined.
My expectations are ridiculously high but if anyone can deliver its Zhang Yimou.

I've been looking forward to this for ages. Hopefully it won't disappoint. Although i'm pretty sure Miramax's presentation will, judging by their past record :(

I don't normally post my excitement, but..
  :rocker:
Not felt this kind of excitement since I saw the first pictures of CTHD! Even then, chances of getting a subtitled cinema release in the UK were slim to none. After CTHD, anything goes. Thank you CTHD, thank you Kung-Fu and arthouse movie makers... THANK YOU!
But, wait. So it's getting a December release in HK (you lucky people!!). Any UK/European dates?

Well apparently it will also open in the US on a limited release in December because miramax wants it to compete for the oscars ... so an early US 2003 general release is expected and so can a UK early 2003 be expected if it does well.

Looks like, if Miramax do their maths. Release it in select cinemas before Christmas (or thereabouts), and release it as the Oscars are kicking off. Spend the time between December and March (or whenever the Oscars are on :P), promoting and slowly opening out the amount of prints and cinemas showing it. It worked with Crouching tiger, Hidden Dragon. I cannot see why the same strategy not work. Also a buzz on the internet wouldn't go amiss, therefore a release of the film on DVD by the Hong Kong company for Febuary will get everyone talking.
However. If they want to follow their tried and tested (stupid, stupid, stupid) strategy, cut, dub and somewhere have Kung Fu Fighting replace the soundtrack. Market it as starring Jet Li, the star of Romeo Must Die and Zhang Ziyi from Crouching tiger, Hidden Dragon (they won't tell us that her role is small compared to Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung's). They might even mention Donnie Yen, from Blade 2.
I know they will start the trailer with "In a land before time..."
Urm... and can't you see that this has been my most anticipated film of the past year and a bit :P (ever since Jet Li was noted to be going back to Asia to film).

monkeypeaches.com production diary on Hero has been updated!
"Last day of the shooting. Maggie Cheung and Leung Chiu-Wai had finished their scenes two days before, but they did not leave. Maggie Cheung came wearing a pair of sunglass because she knew she would cry that day. Director of CAUSE Gan Lu and her colleagues spent two nights to edit out a 10-minute documentary called 10 DAYS and showed it to everyone. People were cheering for whoever shown up on the screen, Zhang Yimou were taking pictures for others, they were saying goodbye to each other with tear in their eyes..."
CAUSE is a special documentary on the making of Hero which is going to be shown in China over a series of programmes ... It would be nice to have this on DVD as an extra although I would probably buy it on its own!

Please please let this come to UK cinema's uncut with the original language and music, and then a proper DVD release.
I take it the whole film is in Mandarin like the trailer? Are they the original actors voicing it?

Hero has apparently been pushed back to a November 2003 release date for the West because they probably need time to re-edit and perhaps re-score and dub the film for a wider audience.
There also seems to be a mis-communication with the distributors in the East who believed that Hero would be entered into the Oscar race (China has already officially submitted the film) for the 2003 season. Miramax think that it is too soon to enter Hero for the oscars due to the success of CTHD and that it would not stand a chance of winning because of the copycat feeling everyone would have if they watched it for the Oscar 2003 season.
Well it looks like the Hero R3 DVD is going to be a massive seller ... lets hope Miramax do not force R3 distributors to exclude English subs.

Heres a Donnie Yen Poster to tie you poor souls in the UK over until the year 2004 release of Hero ... me I'm gonna see it this 'Xmas .... woohoo!

Hopefully a good quality R3 DVD will be out as quickly as possible after the theatrical release in HK and China. The last thing i want to do is to wait for over a year for Miramax to release it over here :oh-hum:

Nope - I'm not too fussed about this either - the R3 will suffice like my CTHD R3 did.

Wow Thats great news on the DVD but what if the film does really well?
I think even with the poor performance of CTHD in Asia the DVD still took 6 months to appear.
February seems too soon ... don't hold your breath is all I'm saying but great if it does! :D

The date mentioned for the VCD/DVD release seems a bit too quick for a high profile film, but as a bench mark title to combat piracy, I wouldn't go against it. Especially if I can see it sooner.
A little note. Seems like edko will be releasing the film on DVD. Although they don't release much, from what I gather. Their more recent releases have been anamorphic iirc. So at least a good presentation I hope.

Edko released the HK version of Sassy Girl. If they good as good a job (anamorphic, dts) then I'll be very happy.
