Question:
My R1 copy of Panic Room Superbit arrived from DVDBOXOFFICE yesterday. By chance my kids were watching another dvd in the other room, so I shoved it into my notebook computer to watch. This has been set up to use DVDGenie that automatically scans the disc to report region code before playing.....and guess what it is encoded regions 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and 8!
How many others are there? Is Columbia dropping region codes?
Maybe it was a mistake.
Or maybe Columbia is the first major studio to work out for themselves that they are wasting huge amounts of money making separate masters for different regions (except where local censorship requires it).
After all, most DVD users will have sufficiently up-to-date gear as to be able to play NTSC format, even if that isn't the native format for their country.
So, what's the commercial benefit in placing restrictive codes on DVDs where the film has completed its worldwide staggered theatrical release?
Panic Room is a R1 RCE disc. RCE titles are indicated as all-zone discs on DVD PCs: this is part of the RCE system and is designed to trip up multiregion DVD players.

Adam Ah yes, of course. The disc has to be coded all regions, so that the player's firmware allows the disc to load, and thus allows the disc's software to do its 'clever' stuff to decide whether or not to trap you in the warning screen, or show you the menu.
Clearly, I was optimistic when I suggested that Columbia had at last come to their senses and recognised that region coding is primarily there to protect theatrical new releases (which this title isn't).
