Douglas Sirk & "Imitation of Life"
Question:

With Todd Haynes' Far from heaven on the way, I just wondered what the best Douglas Sirk dvds were?
There are fab Criterions of Written on the Wind & All that heaven allows but what about Imitation of life?
It's one of the most ridiculous, camp & (intentionally?!) hilarious films I've ever seen! Are there any plans for a dvd of this?
Lana Turner being well, um Lana Turner and Sandra Dee so wonderfully bloody annoying you just wanna reach into the screen and slap her. Hard. "oh Steeeeve, Steeeeve!"
I love it! :D
As for Annie 'never ever left the kitchen, so how did she ever know all those grieving people!' Loomis' funeral - hats off to the funniest film funeral ever!
I have a horrible feeling that I'm the only person who knows what I'm waffling on about! :o
(someone else must like ironic-crap like this too!?)

Answers:

Not heard anything about a DVD. It was on TV not too long ago and that was the first time I saw it although I was primed for the usual exaggerated qualities, the funeral at the end was a little hard to take. Still found myself moved by it though which is more than I could say for the rest of the movie. Interesting to watch as a kind of social history piece but not really on the same hyper-emotional plane as the fantastic All That Heaven Allows or Written on the Wind.
AFAIK Lured is the only other Sirk available apart from the aforementioned two Criterions.

Wash your mouths out!
It was on at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith a couple of weeks ago, and I fell in love with it. Sirk's movies are certainly heightened, but they are also sincere and not "ironic crap"!
I thought it was a brilliant, beautiful drama about mothers and daughters drifting apart - even Sandra Dee's beyond-hyper performance can do little to spoil the film, and I think it works awfully well in the scheme of things.
I'd buy it in an instant (along with The Tarnished Angels, Interlude, A Time to Love and A Time to Die, The Magnificent Obsession and plenty more) - in fact, I'm off to get Lured right this moment (thanks Jonathan)!
