Question:
I was looking forward to this but now i'm really not feeling like setting that extra cash, especially when you got Minority report, Staw Wars, Spidey and a whole host of others coming out. plus i've only watched the original once so far and just glanced over the extras.
Although, you all know how it is, with all the buzz that's gonna happen and eveyone talking about it you feel like you're missing out.
I think the wise thing to do is wait until it's in a sale or somithing.
Anyone else gonna miss out on it initially?
*Apologise for bad spelling i've had a few. And it loooks fine to me.
gonna give it a miss here too ... dont think I could be arsed sitting through all the extras anyway! :D
probably wait and see what sort of prices it's available for after the release...
I'll probably give it a miss. I would definitely never have even considered it if the first edition had a commentary.
But the facts remain - 1/ I haven't bothered with the extras on the current edition, 2/ I think the film's too long as it is - not the beautifully set up first half, but the repetitive 'action' second half and 3/ Let's face it, an even more definitive version will probably be along within 24 months.
Personally I think I'll stick with the 2 disc version. Plenty of extras on that one for me, as I rarely watch the features more than once anyway.
The extra footage hardly looks exciting either. From play.com - "While the Hobbits are sleeping, Frodo is woken by Aragorn singing an elvish tune that foreshadow's his relationship with Arwen" Whoop-de-doo, exciting stuff!
hmmm...would i be right in thinking when the 4 disk version does come out, we'll be awash with cheap versions of the 2 disk....hmmm....
I don't feel so alone now. :D
Thanks guys.
Money well spent on the likes of Spidey and Minority Report. There's bound to be a kick ass trilogy boxset anyway. 12-discs or somesuch.
I think the 2 disc version is good enough if you don`t mind missing a few extras, and once you`ve seen them do you realy watch them over and over?
only 12 :/
i'm expecting at least 15 :D
yeah i think unless i can pursuade someone to buy it for me for christmas i'll just pick up a cheap 2-disk one from somewhere...
i do have Spidey LE and E.T UE on pre-order!! :D

Having watched this last week, I have to say that I think that the extended version is well worth getting, as the film is now a lot more evenly paced. The second half of the film now doesn't feel like so much of an action-thon. It actually made the film feel a bit shorter, as I found myself getting a little overwhelmed by the relentless action of the original.
manzo
I will not be buying this i did not bother with the first release. But i will borrow my friend copy just to see the 30mins extra and a couple of extras
Would I be a :dork: if I said that I bought both the 2 disc and the 4 disc version? Hang on, I know the answer to that one!
Have to say that the 4 discer is worth the extra, especially if you don't have the 2 disc. Dunno if you'll want (or need) the Argonath bookends though.
The extra footage and slight plot alterations make the extended cut both a more complete movie and a lot closer to the book, IMHO. And the extras are triffic! Much better than the mostly promotional stuff on the 2-disc.

aye! my thoughts (and deeds) exactly!
well worth seeing IMO and the extended scenes seem to explain certain actions by the characters better ..
I wouldn't buy it if it was just the extended film. I hate revisionist filmmaking. However I am buying it for the extras. Damn New Line, you got us all!

Definatley worth it for the extended cut, it explains a lot more and its obvious the cuts were purely made for time rather than any superfluceness (sp?)
I like the bookends, remarkably good quality and they look great on the mantlepiece!
Well since posting this thread i've bought the set and i don't have any regrets about it. I own both versions of the movie and find the extras on this set absolutely fantastic.
Not only do you get the behind the scenes stuff which is genuinely interesting but a history of Tolkien and his idealogies an dsome amazing interviews filled with anecdotes from the principal cast.
I'm glad i didn't wait to get this now as it's been great watching the extras on these cold Wintery nights, it really transports you elsewhere.
Mind you looking at my first post i must have had a few too many as it didn't make much sense. :D
If you're going to buy the film on DVD, then I don't see any sane reason not to buy the 4-disk EE. The extras will be far superior to the 2-disc release, both in the way of commentaries and documentaries.
This goes especially if you've read(and enjoyed) the books, as the extra footage will no doubt cover more elements of the book that were left out of the theatrical release, whether it be a couple of lines of dialogue or a whole scene - as in the 'leaving the council of Elrond' scene in FOTR.
It would especially amaze me, because virtually everyone dislikes it when a film gets cut, even by a few seconds. So not to buy it when there are minutes and minutes of the stuff left out would be madness.
I'll be buying it. But not the 2-disc.
EDIT - Thought this thread was about TT! Still, it's all relevant.
Have to say .. one thing that grates slightly on the 4 disc extras is Richard Taylor's voice (think that's his name - he's the fella in charge of Weta). Everytime he spoke it was at just the right pitch to annoy the hell out of me.
I know, i'm a moany git and he'd probably find my lilting Welsh accent annoying too :D
I know exactly what you mean. So monotinous after 5 mins let alone 45.
Shame that, since it was one of my favourite sections.
I wasn't going to bother buying it but my brother told me he's got me it for Xmas. Oh well, lets me save my cash for something else :)

Amen!. Everything he says sounds sooo scripted. He seems incredibly articulate and obviously knows his stuff but his voice.
Arrghh!!!!!!!!
God forbid, he doesn't appear in a commentary does he?
The four disc extended FotR is the best DVD I own, and I own quite a few. Get it in :p
I waited for the extended edition, once you see it, you won't want to go back to the threatical cut, extended much better!:rocker:
I am 2 hours into the 8 hour doc on the 4 disc version and it rules. Im saving the longer cut of the movie to watch on the nights before I go see Two Towers at the flicks.
This is my fav dvd already and great value for money to and i already own the 2 disc as well :shocker:
The 4 disc set has actually persuaded a luddite friend of mine to buy his first ever DVD player and a larger television (hes had a portable in his living room since we left Uni 9 years ago) just to watch it! :shocker: I never expected that to happen!
As for me, I have bought the collectors edition with the bookends for my sister for Christmas (she doesn't know it yet).
As for me, I have bought no version for myself as I hated the film and the books. However, if I had enjoyed it, I know I would have bought both versions of the DVD. 'cause I'm sad like that! ;)
Special editon of LOTR did not do much for me as I found the extra scenes added nothing to the overall quality of the film.
In fact I found that they made the film drag on for far too long where as the theatrical version maintains a good even balance of action and storyline.
Thankfully I borrowed the special edition from a mate so I will save myself £21 and get the 2 disc release.
The first commentary is raelly interesting, and never seems to drag. I found it was perfect to have on in the background if you have some work to do.
Even bettter than the American Pie commentary:clap:
