Question:
I happen to like 'American History X' (despite flaws in the way Ed Norton's character develops within the film + his bandy legs of course ;) ) but I think 'The Believer' is a much more convincing, complex, & thought provoking piece of work than it's better known 'cinematic cousin'.
So what does everyone else think :)
The Believer by a country mile! Ryan Gosling did a superb job, and the film rang truer than American History X - I would highly recommend this film!
I've not seen The Believer but just thinking about American History X has just given me terrible toothache...!!:)
'The Believer' by some way - fascinating ideas in the script and Ryan Gosling is remarkable (he even partly redeemed 'Murder by Numbers').

If you want to see it I'll lend it to you .... LMK :)
American History X rules by long shot. The Beliver is seriously flawed.
WELL - I ain't seen The Believer, but I am looking forward to this one. It might have the certain "edge" that American History X was lacking (ie. a plot)
Hopefully the lead actor doesn't have a totally incapable younger brother who can't convince, and has blatantly jelly-like legs

And here was me trying to think of the name of that bloke that hates Edward Norton from previous threads !!:)
RDNZL...I'd love to borrow it, whereabouts in Hinckley are you ?
Check out the sig - it's done me well over the months...
Haha. I take it The Believer isn't out on R1 yet? I can only find it on R2 from Play.

is it worth getting the R2 release now or is there a better release due soon?
Definitely fancy seeing it now after some of the comments here.
Picked up The Believer (along with Outlaw Josey Wales SE) from HMVs BOGOF sale this afternoon. Will probably watch it later tonight. American History X is one of my favourite films so I am expecting good things from this.

is my review of the R2 release...
Predictably, I couldn't avoid the contrast between the two. :D
The Believer. Terrible finale though. Not convincing at all, even if the very last scene itself was sheer brilliance.
Gosling is a young star waiting to explode I'm sure (if he's got range). Put him in a film with Mandy Moore right now, I tell you!

Baconjoe..for all your criticism of Ed's 'jelly legs', I strongly suspect that you wouldn't know a pair of 'jelly legs' if they came up to you and wobbled in your face...admit it!!..you know nothing about legs, jelly or otherwise:smokin:, you are,, in fact, a legs ignoramus:nono:
The Believer is a good film and Gosling is a promising actor, but AHX is a flat out masterpiece. 7/10 and 10/10

UNTRUE
In fact I rose to the position of Senior Leg Inspector for "Pretty Polly" tights, wabs and pants over 4 years (longest years of my life)
However I had no experience of skinhead's legs - make of that what you will:|
