Death To Smoochy
Question:

Just finished watching Death To Smoochy. Excellent film if you like Black comedy. Look out for the court scene with Robin Williams. Can't see why it didn't do well in the states. :rocker: :notworthy

Probably because it was a black comedy. These are very difficult to market over there as I understand.
Mainly because the mainstream audiences dont do dark humour; they just dont get it.

Answers:

that, and since film four went tits up it got lost in straight to video hell

Answers:

Yes I know, I love it too, will be getting the DVD.
Other recent dark comedy that didn't do well either is Steve Martin's Novocaine, also excellent.
There is a very limited audience for such movies, people want dumb action (xXx) or dumb comedies (Deuce Bigalow) or simple kiddie stuff, nothing multilayered.
At least I'm glad it was made at all.
Also, Danny DeVito's whole career consists mostly of such humor and this one he even directed, so I truly appreciate his work, he seems to be in the same vein of taste as me, and I'm sure the movie would have had a darker ending if not for the studio hoping to make money, now that it didn't anyway, it's a shame.

Must remember to check out this film at some point.
Not all reviews have been positive, but I'll give it a shot.

I bought this unseen and really enjoyed it. A fair few "laugh out loud" moments and a really nice dark twist on the kiddy TV industry. I'd have prefered to see more depth to the satire, but I really enjoyed the film and thought the performances were great. Definitely going to listen to the commentary in full at some point, though it started out a little bit "oh this actor/actress was great".

Yup, I enjoyed this movie too. It looked great, with lots of DeVito's crazy camera angles .... a fine performance by Robin Williams, more like the kinda stuff he did back during his "funny" years. Just a shame about the cop-out ending.

I saw it a few weeks ago, and I have to admit I wasn't very impressed.

I've just finished watching it and loved it. Its quite dark but very funny. I couldn't believe what a savaging Roger Ebert gave it:shocker:
Its interesting that Ed Norton and Catherine Keener are currently in a play together in New York playing characters that are the reverse of the characters they play in this film.

Bit late for me to pick this one up, but after seeing Robin Williams on Parkinson at the weekend I took the plunge and have ordered this disc from ABSound.
What appeals to me that the US film critics didn't really get it, but god bless internet forums much like this one that people who actually care about a film have praised this and just look at the cast. Looking forward to this disc... plus I understand there are some nice extras on it as well?
