Not one of those films you listed were 'great' to me - in fact, I thought they were all pretty average.
The best year for me from the last ten years or so was 1997, which had quality films like (in alphabetical order):
Afflicition
As Good As It Gets
The Big Lebowski
Boogie Nights
Breakdown
The Butcher Boy
The Castle
Cube
Eve's Bayou
Good Will Hunting
Grosse Pointe Blank
Hana-Bi
The Ice Storm
L.A Confidential
Life Is Beautiful
Ma Vie En Rose
Nil By Mouth
Pi
Regeneration
Savior
The Spanish Prisoner
The Sweet Hereafter
TwentyFourSeven
Most years there are like five to ten films I really like, so 1997 was a really good year for me. 2002 is shaping up really well, though. 1997 was great though........
............ but it did give us Spiceworld! :oh-hum:

All crap!
Monsters Inc
Panic Room
And disappointing given the previous work from Pixar and Fincher.
Much better...
Mulholland Drive
Behind The Sun
Made
Dinner Rush
Vanilla Sky
Stuart Little 2
Talk To Her
The Lawless Heart
Tape
Heaven

I haven't seen all the films Assilem 23 mentions, but calling a deeply offensive piece like "Life is Beautiful" a quality film is bizarre.

Having said that your list of great directors is admirable, Assilem.

I've seen all but two of them, and Life Is Beautiful is the best on the list!
I take it you vomitted at M*A*S*H and spat at the T.V. during Blackadder Goes Fourth!

I swear we get a couple of threads like this every year saying, wow this years films are amazing compared to any other year...
I'm sure the films are only good because you've only seen them recently for the first time, and as time passes most of the films on your lists are forgotten.

i won't be forgetting the royal tenenbaums, mulholland drive, brotherhood of the wolf or donnie darko anytime soon but it's still been a while since a blockbuster movie has really made an impression on me, so not a particularly special year.

Answers:

in my book, blockbusters=bad so you're not going to find any quality there anyway so don't judge a year by its blockbusters

Three, sorry, now that I've checked the list again. Eve's Bayou, Saviour and Ma Vie En Rose.
Titanic should be at the top of that list. In BOLD

Answers:

The best year (years) were 1998/99 when you had exceptional films like the matrix and blade released.
For me, next year looks like the best in a while what with X-Men 2, Matrix 2 and 3, Incredible Hulk, Terminator 3 all being released.:rocker: :notworthy

I think 94 was best - the films competing for Best Picture that year were Quiz Show, Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, Shawshank Redemption and Four Weddings And A Funeral.

I thought about placing Titanic in that list, but as I didn't exactly like it I left it out.
Eve's Bayou - in my top 10 films of all time, and one you really should check out
Savior - A very powerful anti-war film and very surprising and moving. Worth a look
Ma Vie En Rose - if you like French comedies, its excellent

Even if it wasn't one of my favourite films of the last few years (I saw it on the big screen again earlier this year, deliberately not telling my fiancée anything about it in advance, and she thinks it's one of the best films she's ever seen), I wouldn't accept an argument based on that logic.
The mere existence of Birth of a Nation and Triumph of the Will shows that it's possible to make "quality films" that are "deeply offensive"!
In any case, offensive to whom? You? Me? The crazed genius behind Capalert?

There was a poll earlier this year to determine the best film score of all time - and the fact that Howard Shore won for The Fellowship of the Ring and Bernard Herrmann wasn't even mentioned anywhere on the list is a bit of a giveaway as to where most of the pollsters were coming from!
Then again, there are unquestionably good years and bad years - this is shaping up to be an exceptional year for British films, for instance, whereas 2000 was unutterably dire (tenth-rate gangster films for the most part).
Incidentally, I'd certainly have added Lost Highway and Starship Troopers to Assilem23's 1997 list, not to mention The Kingdom II - but I can't help noticing that the definition of "1997" is a bit wide - there are quite a few 1996 and 1998 films on there!

Remember if it wasn't for all the 'bad' blockbusters making the majority of Hollywoods money, alot of the films mentioned above couldn't have made it to the screen.

I agree, there are some superb British films this year - 24 Hour Party People, Sweet Sixteen, All or Nothing and This Is Not A Love Song - of those I have seen. Any other nominations?
I'm way behind on the summer releases - despite it being one of my most anticipated films I haven't seen Minority Report (location, location :brickwall ). My highlights of the year..
Femme Fatalle
Mulholland Drive
Irreversible
Vanilla Sky
24hr Party People
Dog Days
Russian Ark
(3 of which haven't yet received UK releases :p)

I haven't seen any of these yet, but Morvern Callar, Once Upon a Time in the Midlands, Christy Malry's Own Double Entry, My Little Eye and My Kingdom all have plenty of fans - and Peter Mullan's recent snaring of the Venice Golden Lion for The Magdalen Sisters suggests that the considerable promise he showed with Orphans is more than followed up here.

Most of the films mentioned above - particularly in Assilem23's list - had nothing to do with Hollywood.

The Lawless Heart is probably the best British film I've seen this year. I also liked 24 Hour Party People, but haven't seen the other three on your list - have they been released yet?
To be honest, I'm not sure it's been that special a year for UK films. Here are a few that have had certain levels of hype or acclaim...
Last Orders - great film
Crush - one fabulous scene, and reasonably good, if predictable and sometimes OTT.
About A Boy - good film, maybe not up there with Weddings or Notthing Hill though
Bend It Like Beckham - pleasing and instantly forgettable
Ali G - cant remember a single moment of it!
Charlotte Gray - just terrible. No atmosphere, soulless lead actress
Iris - good, never great, unappealling leads
Long Time Dead - cheap and nasty horror garbage
Nobody Someday - let's face it, a Robbie Williams documentary was one of the best UK films of the year
Dog Soldiers - loved by many, not me

Yeah, Lost Highway should have been in my list - don't know how I missed it. Starship Troopers was a lot of fun, but not terribly memorable for me.
As to some of those films being from 1996 and 1998 - The Big Lebowski, Savior and Pi are 1998 (memory playing tricks on me there!) but none are from 1996. So that's twenty good films from 1997, not twenty-three.
I agree with you about this year for British films - some very good films being made and released - and ironically one of the worst (FilmFour closure, Granada Films etc). Thank God for the recent success of Working Title, meaning the situation isn't as dire as it could have been.

I don't know... I think there have been a heck of a lot more disappointments this year than the last few years.
Movies I expected a lot more from include:
Ocean's Eleven
Ali
Panic Room
Minority Report
Men In Black II
Insomnia
Top stuff this year includes:
Attack Of The Clones
Bully
Spider-Man
Sum Of All Fears
Training Day
Donnie Darko

I also expected a lot more from most of the titles you mentioned, with the exception of Ali, which surprised me. I was expecting a very typical biopic that I didn't expect to like as I loathe boxing, and I found it engrossing and extremely well made.
My top stuff for this year wouldn't include most of those - have yet to see Bully and Donnie Darko (though they are on my lists of must-see). Films I've enjoyed this year (released cinematically in the UK in the year 2002 (some were 2001), so preempting Michael here!:
Lantana (finally saw it this afternoon)
Spider
Heaven
Lost In La Mancha
Pollock
About A Boy
The Royal Tenenbaums
In The Bedroom
Iris
Mulholland Drive
Last Orders
Monsoon Wedding
and I'm anticipating Road To Perdition, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Full Frontal, City Of God, and The Four Feathers.
All that makes 2002 a good year - much better than last year. The real test comes when I look back at this year in a few years time. I have a feeling a few of those films will have dropped off the radar.

Well I've been very impressed by a lot of the movies released this year such as:
Spiderman
Blade 2
Star Wars: Ep 2
The Bourne Identity
The Scorpion King
Oceans Eleven
Minority Report
Austin Powers: Goldmember
Donnie Darko
Mulholland Drive
Changing Lanes
These were all really excellent films IMO seeing as I rate movies purely on an enjoyment front and don't buy into all this 'poor script' and 'unimaginative cinematography' for rating a movie poorly. Looking forward to seeing Signs at the pics this weekend as well. Plus I am looking forward to purchasing some more on DVD like The Sum of all Fears
