Midnight Run, perhaps the most 'purely enjoyable' film ever made - NOW, NOW, NOW!!!
Question:

It has a huge forum following, but for anyone who hasn't seen it, I recommend you give it a watch. Tonight at 10.55pm, BBC1.
This is a 10/10, five star opus! Possibly the greatest comedy, action movie, buddy movie, road movie ever filmed. Perhaps the greatest screen actor of all time, Robert DeNiro, gives his finest performance and still doesn't manage to be better than Charles Grodin.
A sheer delight in every way. Even women enjoy it despite having only three female speaking parts (and they're very brief at that), although they also enjoyed The Shawshank Redemption which didn't have any! Like Die Hard in the same year, it cleverly keeps the bad guys as funny and quotable as our heros.
Ben Affleck rates Midnight Run as the greatest film ever made - what more of a recommendation do you need than that?
Tonight! 10.55pm. You know it makes sense.

Answers:

One of about 4 De Niro films I haven't seen and I did just think for a moment I wont be in home time but fortunately I remember its last orders at 10:30 tonight so i'll be home just in time - I just hate watching films when not totally sober. I ironically fell asleep during insomnia the other night (not any reflection on the film - just had a few too many)

Answers:

Yes! I absolutely love 100% of it!
Isn't it gona be pan&scammed on TV though?
Charles Grodin is the best, way better than even John Cleese and Chevy Chase!

Answers:

no contradictions from me guys, but the problem is that it clashes with Something Wild, arguably Jonathan Demme's and Ray Liotta's best films/performances, which is on BBC2 at 12.10 - if you haven't seen it make sure that you do!

Answers:

i just checked the bbc website and it warns of strong language and lists the film as widescreen. so looks like it won't be the old tv version (alas as it was funnier ) and won't be pan and scanned:)

Good film but Midnight Run is better!! :D :p
Also, as far as I know BBC1 are showing the UNCUT version tonight!  (well the TV Guide says the film is worth watching as the uncut version is being shown so hopefully it is correct! :D )

well, seeing as there's such a fuss over this, i think i'll have to check it out now, and record it too.
cheers for the heads-up

It's certainly hugely enjoyable by any standards - but I was rather underwhelmed by it when I caught up with it again a couple of years ago: it dragged rather more than I remembered (it's definitely overlong at 125 minutes), and Charles Grodin's endless lifestyle advice had much the same effect on me that it did on De Niro, and I'm not sure this was intentional.
Definitely worth seeing if you haven't seen it already, though.

Dragged!!
Everytime I watch this film the time just flies by for me! Maybe it's just one of these films that flies by for me because I get a real kick out of the performances and the dialogue.
The looks on De Niros face when Charles Grodin starts spouting crap about his lifestyle puts me in stitches everytime.
For me this is one of De Niros best films, I rank it up there alongside Raging Bull and Goodfellas because on a purely fun level it succeeds very very well.
'Jack you should give up smoking......' :D

Let's face it, this is one of the finest films ever made. On repeat viewing, you'll notice that virtually every single line advances both the plot and the characters, just how many wonderful running gags there are that pay off so beautifully (the sunglasses, the 'Marvin watch out!' gag, the dim guy who keeps popping out 'to get some doughnuts'), and just how oddly moving the central relationship becomes by the end. It's high time Midnight Run was recognised more widely for the classic that it is. :D

Is this on in Scotland? Can't see any mention of it after scanning the TV guides from 3 newspapers...
Incidentally, 'Out of Control' - the winner of Best British Feature at the Edinburgh film festival is on BBC1 around 9. Following 'The Navigators' and 'Bloody Sunday', another interesting British film goes straight-to-tv... (though I did see a cinema screening of 'Bloody Sunday' in Croatia  )

MMM....will have to make a point of watching this too..definately a classic :rocker:

I think i've seen a version on TV heavily censored for language which would be a great shame. They also had a 'bad language' warning in the Radio Times at the time and the result was laughable when you consider the high volume of expletives.
A great film dont miss it.

It's not bad but I don't think it's especially good either. I tend to agree with Michael B - certainly way overlong. I won't be bothering with it tonight, but then I have the Criterion of "Wild Strawberries" to keep me occupied.

NOW! NOW! NOW!
And it's totally uncut - prolly for the first time ever in the UK! That lock picking scene from the first minute has always been trimmed over here to avoid copycats.
And it's widescreen! FANTASTIC!

I ran a thread a few weeks back about this film calling for a rereleased version of this so hopefully somebody from universal is watching

Answers:

Well after having watched it I do not see what all the fuss is about - sure it wasnt a bad film but I was expecting so much more given all the hype on this thread. It was quite amusing in a lot of places but how can anyone possibly rate this up there alongside the likes of Airplane! and Spinal Tap etc. as a comedy classic (see other thread floating about in this forum) is well beyond me.

Answers:

I recorded it from last night and watched it this morning - absolute brilliance. I agree it's overlong but it never seems boring in the slightest. One of the best films I've seen this year!

I guess it doesn't help that it was overhyped but for me this is still one of the funniest movies I have seen, I absolutely love it.
I would personally rate this way above Spinal Tap, I never liked Spinal Tap much and have never thought it was that funny. I guess since I didn't grow up with all those rock bands and in that era a lot of the humour may have passed me. Maybe a bit more knowledge of rock music would help I am not sure

I watched it for the first time last night, and while it was a decent enough movie, it was a long way from being a classic.
IMHO, of course. ;)

yup, hype never does a film any favours. people don't seem to realise this and think the more they rave about something the better. :(
i find the less i know about a film beforehand the more i enjoy it.
it was a good film though. ;)

This is possibly my all-time favourite film,
wonderfulll dialogue thoroughout....
"Did you ever have sex with an animal jack?"
"Don't say a word to me Sidney, don't say a fu...."
"You have two emotions Jack, silence and rage"
"YOU LIED TO ME FIRST!!"
"What is it with you and the Chicago Police Department?"
"I'M MOSELY!!!!!!"

totally agree.
i think McD pulled a fast one on us. :nono:
good movie (that reminded me a lot of Beverly Hills Cop - same director), but not "the most purely enjoyable film ever made" by any stretch of the imagination!!!

Answers:

The very thought!
It's a classic. And it's just as good the 20th time you see it as it was the first. Like most movies I'm incredibly fond of, it didn't give me the greatest pleasure it had to offer on first viewing.
Full marks for showing the body of the film uncut, and in widescreen. But a big black mark for the usual practice of talking over the end credits, which were reduced to about 20% of their original length! Scandalous.
Danny Elfman's superb score is wonderfully brought to a close - wrapping up both the score and the mood of the film in the last 20 seconds (the soundtrack features Elfman singing over the end credits!) - but trust the BBC not to notice or care about that kinda thing.
Should Waiting for Guffman, another flick from my movie quote quiz, ever appear on TV - they'll probably cut the credits for that too. And, even more than Midnight Run, that's a movie that doesn't truly wrap until the very end - without outtakes or any other gimmicks - just credits and music.
