I do not want to go Criterion. Not worth the cash.
I've been wanting to see this film for ages but am a bit hesitant to pay £40 for it. Play did have it for £24.99 but it says "out of stock". I've heard the carlton disk is a bit dodgy picture wise, and I've not heard of the other release.
I thought the Carlton R2 is 4.3
It was filmed at 4.3 but then intended to be matted for cinema release. The Criterion is at the director approved 1.66 but is letterboxed (like their Robocop) and is NOT anamorphic also has loads of extras.
This is now oop as MGM ? have the US rights now, so would not expect Play to get it back in. Is already starting to climb in value as oop Criterion. ********* did have some for around £50 but I think now sold out, could always ask.
There is also an oop Dutch version (according to DVDZone2 anyway) which is mentioned on DVDCompare which has the extras.
Been looking into this myself and trying to hunt down the Dutch version (via some google searches). Have managed to find a couple of Dutch sites but translating them's a bit tricky. Seems to go for about £18-20 though (no idea about delivery). Might go for it at some point as it is definitely one of Cronenberg's best.

The Criterion is superb, but OOP so you will have to hunt hard (like all the way to aprout's thread ;) ) but it is worth it up to a point (I got mine just as it was announced OOP so didn't pay over the top on price - <£20). Not sure how good the TF1 edition is but have heard bad things about the Carlton edition.
One point to note - on the TFI version the French sub-titles cannot be turned off.
