Doug Chiang not returning for SW III
Question:

http://www.swmovies.net/episode-iii/news/#020908,0930,00275
this is sad news indeed
We decided to contact Doug directly to get the answer 'from the horses mouth,' so to speak. Here's what Doug Chiang told us.
Glenn,
Yes, it's true that I resigned earlier this year to work on another film. It was a very hard decision especially after 13 years with the company. However, if my schedule allows I will try to contribute some designs for ep 3.
Best,
Doug
So it looks like Doug Chiang will definitely not be heading up the Concept Design Team for the final film of the trilogy. Hopefully, though, his schedule will allow him to provide some input on the look and feel of the final film in the prequel trilogy. I'm sure many fans will agree that Doug Chiang will be sadly missed.
In hindsight it does seem that the signs of his departure were there, but not picked up on. In this interview with 3DArtist FV from July '01 Doug referred to his time with ILM in the past tense.
While at ILM I was always striving to improve my skills, both as an artist and as a designer. I was happy with the work at ILM but a part of me felt the desire to keep growing.
I am sure that other sources can be found with similar references, if we look hard enough. But Doug has confirmed the situation and we wish him every success for his future.

Chaing is a terrific designer, but there are people out there equally as good, so it's not a big problem, I think...

look at it this way, he's gone to work on a better film:)

that is one way of looking at it as well

I felt his designs were lacking some of the "harder" edge to them that the 3rd film will need more of, as it gets closer to Ep 4. He's very good - but a new eye never hurts.

Dunno how much he was involved in the character design for 1 and 2, but I thought they were all WELL behind the designs for 4,5 and 6;
i.e. Stormtroopers, C3PO, Vader, Boba Fett, R2D2, etc. etc.
Vs
Darth Maul, battle droids, flying ant men, urrrrm thats it.

The work displayed by Chiang in the Art Of Star Wars books was of the highest quality. I'll miss his input but I doubt Ep III will be any better/worse for it...

Answers:

His artwork did look fantastic, but I always felt (after looking at the Art of Star Wars books) that he never captured the magic of the original trilogies designs. His concepts were too shiny and nice looking, they didn't feel right and definitely didn't fit into the Star Wars that I grew up on.

Answers:

Lucas signs off on all the designs, so I would think Doug was only doing what he was asked to draw. The designs were deliberately new and shiny.

gotta agree with Panavision on this one

Well Lucas is a frickin' dingle then!. Chiang is clearly a very good illustrater and designer, but it looks that Lucas hasn't pushed him to do some truly memorable designs. The original trilogy concept art always ended up with a truly memorable design, the new films are just boring in comparison.
