Question:
Does anyone have information on the forthcoming DVD of Akira Kurosawa's RAN ? Will it be released by Warner :) or Universal ? :(
Any details about the technical specs (anamorphic, extras....) ?

? Hope this helps...
Warners are releasing Ran in the UK on 16 September. At £9.99 from Play it is a much better option than the $130 retail price ($85 Amazon pre-release price) for the US boxset mentioned above - you don't really want to see 'Madadayo' anyway - it is not a good Kurosawa film.
...while I agree that the Amazon box-set is priced outrageously, I strongly disagree with your assertion that Madadayo "is not a good Kurosawa film"... you could/should at least have added "IMO" to that statement...

Madadayo is not a good film IMPO (In Many People's Opinion):D
Not strictly true - Hendrik is correct, the film is liked by many. Personally, I cringed throughout it and thought it was like watching paint dry. IMO of course;)
I have the Kurosawa documentary disc as well as the R1 of Ran, so wont be going for the box set (although I may replce the Ran disc if its much better - you can get the Kurosawa documentary disc as a separate purchase on R1 at amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005YUQ2/qid=1031743160/sr=1-11/ref=sr_1_11/102-3809924-3110500?v=glance&s=dvd)
I thought the documentary disc was very interesting, btw, and it will appeal to Kurosawa fans. I particularly like the hidden whisky ads!
Madadayo is probably for Kurosawa fans only - but rates well in the amazon reviews.
I am glad to see that RAN will be released by Warner, who seem at least be able to release good discs if they want to (proper aspect ratio, anamorphic enhancement).
I was just afraid that Universal, who messed up almost all of their UK-only discs (Blood Simple, Assault on Precinct 13 and countless others), might have the rights to RAN, because a number of Universal budget DVDs is getting released on the same day.
So I can finally dump the awful US Fox/Lorber RAN disc I bought a couple of years ago.
Looks like the DVD is cancelled
