Question:
I've went to see this new Robert De Niro movie today (well, newest, they still have a shot of the Twin Towers in it), first of all 'cause I really like this director's previous film, The Jackal (ending notwithstanding, for me it ends when the Jackal enters the subway, i press the Stop button there), and had my expectations high. It's a very dark movie, with DeNiro's LaMarca detective sandwiched between his executed father/"child murderer" and his son the "cop killer", with newspaper tabloids reading "the killer gene?".
I found it to be very powerful, dramatic, it made me cry, that does happen but not often. This movie didn't make much money in the US, and I know why. People tend to have their own problems, they think about them, they irritate themselves with anxiety and thoughts, they get tired and when they think about watching a movie, they want "entertainment", something "fun" but not something that would make them think, not something that would make them feel, not something that would make them cry. I, on the other hand, love only such movies and if you do too, I'm sure you'll like City by the Sea which is choke full of amazing acting, even De Niro's still got some new tricks. This movie is so sad that it has some of the best bitter laughs ever, which I won't spoil.
It doesn't have too much action, but is tense and well edited, creates the perfect mood and draws you in, it's on the level of Copland and this year's other dismissed movie, Blood Work, so if you enjoyed them, you'll love this one.
Frances McDormand is wonderful as well, I love her kitty sound in one scene which warms me up to her sexual role in the upcoming Laurel Canyon.
As usual Lenny and i totally disagree ...City by the sea is dissapointing, unbelievable and in no way creates an emotional tie between the viewer and the characters i was looking at my watch after half an hour !! .I am slightly confused as how lenny can say as early on as this that its made no money in the USA since it only opened on Friday. If ever a movie role was miscast it is Deniro in this one ,his character warrants no sympathy he is selfish and aggressive and seems in no way remorseful for his previous behaviour ,his sons loser character scrapes by with an element of the aforementioned but the plot is so slow ,the irony so thin...{the sad past of the once happy and thriving seaside town... now decayed and destroyed lost fovever is an anology of Deniros relationship with his abandoned son...]well its all just a bit obvious isnt it...for the first time ever i felt jesus christ ...Bobby cant act for toffee!!! Francis Mcdormant is fabulous in support ,but it just cant make up for an essentially dissapointing movie.....sorry but thats the truth !!! P.S. If you are Deniros/Douglas'/Pachinos fat police partners in agritty crime thriller beware ....theres 90% chance of getting killed before the end of the movie......

It's actually based on true story and the director didn't want to either dramatize too much or glamorize the relationship, but just let it be like it is.

Because all that matters is the first 3 days, after that it's just 50% and more declines. It grossed a mild 8.9 mil at only $3,500 per screen, showing at 2500+ locations.

Deniro in this one, his character warrants no sympathy he is selfish and aggressive and seems in no way remorseful for his previous behaviour
That's what you got out from it, your personal feelings towards such a character, but that doesn't mean De Niro can't act or was miscast. He warrants a lot of sympathy, he's been divorced and living without his son for so many years and is remorseful, I think you just didn't get it. Plus he is just like thousands of other divorcees, and judging by how my parents live and fight for 20 years now, (thank god I moved out at 14) I think a divorce is often a better choice for everyone involved, children too.
Yeah i know thats "what i get out of it!!" thats what a review is ......an individual gives a personal response and a critique of what they observe ......so to disagree is pretty pointless!!!Trust me ..City by the sea is a dissapointment wherever you are sitting, yopu wont be buying it on dvd ....if you are lenny however u might buy it on video!!!!!!
:D
I will still probably go see it. De Niro is nearly always worth watching. Apart from 15 mins
i was expecting so much more from this with mcdormand and de niro but it was dullsville i was glad when it was finished which was a real pity
Surely with Eliza Dushku appearing, it must have some redeeming features? :norty:
